I am a nursing student so I wanted to get as heads up on Anatomy and Physiology before I took the class. This book is exactly what I needed. I would highly recommend for any medical student to go along with your studies.

I am a physician and got this for my teenager grand children. The book is comprehensive and offers good bases to study farther.

It's a simple book that goes over a complex subject. I love the amount of detail that is covered and how it is explained. It really helped me out for college. I also enjoy how this book is thin and pretty easy to take anywhere with you. It has a section in the back for you to take notes and a "cheat sheet" that basically goes over any important facts.

I found this book particularly helpful during a stressful and stormy chapter of ministry. Kirk helped me to find my still point--to find my center. Jones writes about how it's so easy to get swept up in overload and hurry and to lose one's center. Instead of becoming a beacon of peace and a non-anxious presence many clergy become people of speed and restlessness. In this book Jones helps us find out way back to balance. This title was recommended to me by a friend, and am glad as a pastor I read it. The author is right on target with his remarks aimed at over-worked ministers who struggle with finding energy to meet all the demands placed upon them. Jones is emphatic about clergy needing to have intentional, regular periods of rest and renewal. Drawing heavily upon the analogy of Jesus sleeping in the back of the boat during a storm, he insists that as disciples of Jesus we too need to find our way often to the back of the "boat."This book is a great investment -- it's well worth the money and time spent!

Great book that made me sit back and look at my own self-care in the area of rest. Being in inner-city urban ministry in New York City, you feel like you have to be like your city, and never sleep! I've learned better now!

Truly brings home the fact that caregivers and those in service to others (whether in ministry or other types of service-oriented work) really need to learn how to rest...to take some time to care for ourselves.

This is a wonderful resource, not only for study, but also for nurturing prayer life. It reminds us who is really the heart of our ministry.

This is by far the best introductory text on visual culture I have personally come across. I strongly disagree with some previous reviewers that say the writing is "pompous" or "needlessly complex"; I am by no means an expert on the subject and I found the writing to be extremely comprehensive and even generous when it comes to explanations. The authors seem to make a great effort to be understood and a lot of really complex concepts are presented in a surprisingly and refreshing clear manner. I also disagree with a previous review that claimed that technical terms are frequently unexplained (I, in fact, think quite the opposite). Maybe the complaints about it being "unnecessarily long" could be somewhat justified if you consider that illustrating the concepts through concrete examples is "unnecessary". I think that the examples (although I admit I sometimes skimmed through them) present the rich context of visual culture and even make the text quite pleasant and colorful. That, in my opinion, is really something to be thankful for when it comes to "academic" texts.That said, I have some complaints about the quality-price ratio of the actual materiality of the book itself. I initially borrowed the first edition from my university library (where they gave it a hardcover treatment for durability) and read it almost completely through. As I already said, I thought it was great (and wanted to read the new sections added on the second edition) so I decided to buy it regardless of the surprisingly high $80 price tag. I was quite disappointed when it arrived. The paper is not too great, the typography is not the best for reading and the cover is made from a flimsy and thin "plastified" paper (I also think the design of the cover itself is awful -5 minute random cut and paste-, but you can see that from the product photo and I guess its irrelevant). Besides this, I find the format too big (it is exactly A4!). Thus, the book ends up being one of those "squiggly" books that feel like a wet fish when you have it in your hands. I admit this is not so serious, but for $80 bucks I was expecting something better made...In conclusion: content-wise the book is top notch; materially-wise it leaves a lot to be desired. It is extremely useful and it is no doubt a work of great scholarship. However, its not one of those books you enjoy having in your hands or in your bookshelf (and it will undoubtedly hurt your wallet).

we had to read this for my course and i LOVED IT, very informational and very eye opening. If you want to learn about the visual world of our society and culture then this is the perfect book

When I was looking for a textbook for my visual sociology class I went through several highly academic and rather deadly boring books. Then I came across this one. While it is not exactly what I wanted, it does cover about 90% of the needs for this class. Chapters are set in a logical order and take into account political, commercial as well as sociological and cultural aspects of "looking at" photos, sculptures, paintings, TV and films. All of this is combined with an historical frame. The terminology is well defined and placed into context with understandable examples. The photos and paintings, propaganda material and TV adds are valuable and relevant to the what is covered in the text. It is a readable text but there is one drawback....the authors beat the proverbial dead house when it comes to discussion. Like many academics, including some of my own colleagues, they like to hear themselves talk and, in this case, being read. I am more the..make your point and move on type. So while the book could probably be better edited, it is nonetheless a most valuable source in the practice of looking.

It's ok. It is alittle too dense for most readers. and for anyone with a visual comm or art/design background most if the info is not new.

This book is part of a course I am taking. You never know what book will impact you forever. This one did that for me. It was interesting reading and demanded that you think about the world and how constructs are created all around you without you ever giving it a thought.

I purchase most of my reading material based on the honest amazon reviews from John Q. Public. All the reviews from this book left out a key factor I wish I'd known. ... it's totally an AUTOBIOGRAPHY. It's not a "self-help" positive book to change your thinking, change your life. It's the career path story if Dan Harris written by Dan Harris. He outlines his entire career and then veers off to his skepticism of the 'self-help" industry. Eventually he summarizes bits of spitual and meditative knowledge but 80% if it is about him and his career.It's a fine book of you'd like a peek into the world of network news, however, definitely not worth investing your time to read if you're seeking better insight on how meditation and positivity can improve your attitude. 》》》》》NOT A "SELF-HELP" BOOK as it is portrayed.

Dan Harris makes a huge contribution to the field of mindfulness meditation in 10% Happier. In a way that only a former war correspondent and Nightline news anchor could, Harris has created a lens to look at the phenomenon of mindfulness with a kind of sharpness that is unparalleled in popular or academic literature on this subject.With wit and humility, Harris openly shares his struggles with anxiety in his life and career in front of a camera. Starting with his on-the-air panic attack in 2004, Harris recounts how his ambition-fueled, perfectionist, non-stop work ethic left him subject to emotional meltdowns that led him to use cocaine to self-medicate. Expecting a little more. This is half a personal story and a critical examination of the art of being mindful, especially by meditation. After deciding to give it a 2nd chance and 2nd read, I chose to skip the beginning chapters and/or speed read to about chapter 6 or 7. Then the book was more palatable for me. (Self-help and fiction is not my typical choice for reading... I prefer historical non-fiction) The last summarizing chapter seemed rushed and could have used a few more edits to be both eloquent and succinct. Still can't decide if the author was using a thesaurus or if he really uses that diverse vocabulary in his real life.To be fair, it seemed like an honest account of the author's experience. I think he was authentic in his vulnerability in telling his story. I wish him well in his life. But I would have thought seeing and reporting on really awful shit all over the world would give more perspective. I guess everyone's different. I think everyone can find something useful, however small, within the pages of the book.

Summary of book: Meditation is good for you and you should try it.It was not what I expected. It's an autobiography of Dan's life which I was not interested in reading. It's a book about his journey to meditation. The book is extremely well written which is why I finished it quickly, but if I could do this again, I would NOT purchase this book. Not enough value.

I learned about Dan Harris' book, "10% Happier" when he first introduced it on Weekend GMA. But I was hesitant to read it then. Dan mentioned it again, as well as the follow-up book, "Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics" this last weekend on GMA. In looking at the description of both titles on Amazon, the description of "10% Happier" really resonated with me. Maybe you have to be in a certain place in your life. Fittingly, I purchased and began reading/listening to "10% Happier" on Monday, January 1st. It's an excellent book and I learned so much....so much so that my New Year's resolution is to become more mindful this year. I have a lot more reading to do to further understand the concept of mindfulness (I intend to start with Dan's list of suggested readings). And I'm looking forward to learning more! Also, Dan Harris did a wonderful job narrating the book. I highly recommend "10% Happier"....if you're ready for it!

Bottom Line First: How to Travel with a Salmon is not a good introduction to Umberto Eco. It is a relaxing, mostly good humored collection for his fans. Some of these pieces are dated to the point of being quaint others have to limited audiences. This is the work of a man capable of very sophisticated and complex work. Here he is having some fun. It is best read in that same frame of mind.Having been entangled and over my intellectual head in some of Umberto Eco's more serious essays, I find his How to Travel with a Salmon to be a pleasant read.In this post 9/11 sensitive to security issues world his title essay about the problems of getting a fish onto an airplane, is almost quaint. I had some of the same feelings reading about his bureaucratic snarls in attempting to replace a stolen driver's licenses. Going back to his problems with the salmon, blaming his hotel bill on staff with poor language skills might have been funny before the issue of immigration into Europe became politicized. Now those same hotels tend to count any removal of the contents of an "honor bar" as the same as consumption of those contents. So his intention to preserve his salmon and the staff's lack of lingua franca aside, he would still be out of pocket for refilling the in room ice box.His essays about making a 1:1 map of a country is a lovely skewering of academia and "logical" argument, but not as much fun as his pastiche of academese about the 3 owls poem. I do not have enough background to pick up all the barbs at the various writers mentioned but the overall effect is a humorous shot across the bow of a class of desperately pretentious, trivial papers.Many of the other short pieces in this short collection come off as grumpy old guy complaining about have to travel to too many conferences where he will be a star attraction. Hardly a common enough problem to be as sympathetic as intended. His essay about the cell phone in public needs only slight updating to apply to folks who can only be recognized by the tops of their heads, as they are always bent over texting into their smart phones.

I read this 8 years or so ago and I bought the book to read them again. They are humorous essays on contemporary life. Though they have been written in the 1980s their charm is lasting and for me offer an interesting illustration of how things stay the same.For example, Eco speaks of receiving 'unsolicited faxes' that interfere with his ability to read important faxes. This reminded me of the problem we have with email spam.I find these humorous essays much more entertaining than his novels like Foucault's Pendulum.

This collection is a must read for all fans of Umberto Eco, especially now when we lost him recently. And if someone is not a fan yet, after reading this, you will be.

Another great book by Eco!This book is great. If you like witty short stories, you are going to love this book.

Truth be told I have read this book before. If you have read no Eco this is the prefect primer. The stories and essays give you a nice glimpse into his writing and his humor. Next time I'm in Bologna I have to remember to look him up. One of my favorites is "How to justify a private library" but no fellow traveler can't find at least a smile in "How to travel through customs". It is a great little volume with numerous short bits, pick it up, open at random, enjoy.

Irony and humor!

Arrived on time. The hover was a little more worn than I expected but ok. Great book. Super funny.

If you enjoy irony, satire and or parody, you will be entertained by these essays. It may surprise you that a well educated man can write so humorously and so subtly. Though I am not sure why that should come as a surprise. Enjoy.
