I started reading this because it sounded amazing, a train full of people trying to survive and escape to safety, during an epidemic that made people rage. I tried so hard to like this book, but could not because of the simplistic writing and not mention that at one point, the characters were in a hotdog stand for refuge & in a firehouse 2 pages later! I have read many apocalyptic books but this one couldn't make the cut. A plus was that the characters were very likable.
BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD (Read ONLY if you want to know what happens in this book).I kept seeing this book on my suggested read list and finally decided to purchase it and give it a read. It ended up being a pretty good book. The author really kept the story/action moving right along and the book really doesn't have TIME to ever get dull because there is always something happening every few pages. If you want to know what happens in the book without reading it, here is what happens:The main characters: Andi (train driver), Mark (doctor), and Paul (Juvenile detention worker) and a few other passengers are on an early morning train ride into the city when all hell breaks loose and people start attacking other people while others die. Several people get off the train but a few stay on because its the safest option. While the train rides around the city in a giant loop, they start getting more information from other train engineers, the metro headquarters, and social media that this chaos is going on all over the world. They stay on the train for several hours before they decide its best to find a place to hideout until the chaos is all over. As they try to find a hideout, they are attacked and chased by many crazed people. During their running and hiding, they discover that the people are being affected by some strage noises that seem to be coming from the sky. Those who hear the noise directly die, those who partially hear it (due to talking on phone, having one headphone on one ear, etc) turn crazy, and those who are either underground (like the metro train was at the time of the sound attack) or using some kind of hearing protection (earbuds, noise canceling headphones) are unaffected. One person in the group has an uncle who is in the military at an underground base and the group decides to make the long trek to the base to seek safety. Along the way, they make radio contact with a guy who is a sound engineer and has a safe space. They go there and find out even more about the event. Its some kind of super high frequency hidden in the loud sound that is causing people to die/become violent. They use hearing protection and make their way to the military base where they are all about to be killed but soldiers save them. At the base, it is finally revealed what is happening. The overcast skies open up to reveal several large UFOs that are shooting red beams (sound weapon) at the ground to kill humans. They are underground so they are safe and the book ends with them hiding from the aliens because the don't have the weapons to fight them, have never seen them, or know exactly what they want.
OMG, I read way past my bedtime but I regret nothing. I love this authors writing. And this was a home run!!I loved the way the apocalyptic ending was something taken from real world. Not saying what, spoilers. But I had all the feels. Sadness, but it was needed. And utilized perfectly. Humor, terror. Just everything.If you have not read her books, why???? Buy this, get ready to read to late. Don’t regret it.
The book isn't really what I had expected but was pleasantly surprised. I had a hard time putting it down. It felt a little rushed towards the middle and ending and wasn't as moment by moment as it was towards the beginning. Even with the rushed feeling I didn't feel as if I missed too much or it left a lot unanswered. I'm not sure if this book will be part of a series or just stand alone. I would definitely keep reading if there was a second book.
Sounds from the sky are turning the populous into homicidal maniacs. A subway driver and the passengers on her train are not affected but soon they have to band together to find a place to survive. Once above ground they no longer safe from the deadly people who have been exposed. This is a well written book with interesting characters and story line. I highly recommend this book for the horror fans out there.
As always, Ms. Druga is still at her best....another wonderful...scary...edge of your seat--what is going on? novel written in her unique style that is so good a read! She creates her own world you are always drawn into and characters we know and admire...or hate...lol...I recommend ALL her books as not one has let me down !
Just a good light read. The story moved along and has a number of transitions. Basically focused on a small group of survivors who work together to make it day to day. No evil people just the infected.
I have purchased every single book of this author. Without a doubt my favorite. This was one of those stories that make you think about what it happened, what would you do?
