Our household consists of 11 cats, 2 dogs, and a 14-month-old who thinks that his "tees" and "woof woofs" are pretty much the best things ever. So when little dude started getting difficult to put down for his naps, this book was a no brainer.Little dude already owned and enjoyed other Hello Genius books, so we were really surprised by the size of this one. All of his other Hello Genius books measure about 5" x 5". The copy of Nap Time for Kitty we received measures more like 8" x 8". It's not exactly intended "for little hands" at this size, but the text and pictures are nice and big. Our little guy likes to lay on his back, holding the book over his head, checking out the illustrations. If you own other Hello Genius books, you'll find that the pictures and text / story are consistent with other books in this series. The animal characters in this book are simple and cartoony, adorable and easily recognized as cats. The adult cat is referred to as "Mama", but the young cat is simply referred to as "kitty", not by a name or with any gendered pronoun. The short simple story establishes a pattern, with Mama cat telling her young "kitty" that it's time for a nap and kitty replying "I'm not sleepy now. MEOW!" as s/he frolicks off to make more mischief. Each time, Mama cat tidies up her little kitty and reminds little kitty that it's time for a nap, until finally, on the last pages, little kitty curls up in bed, saying "I'm not sleepy...Purrrrrr.", and drifting off to sleep.Obviously we read this book to our son when we're trying to get him to take a nap. Sometimes we'll read it to him 3 or 4 times before he decides to get comfy and doze off. Sometimes he takes it from us to look at the pictures. And he enjoys this book outside of nap time, too. Sometimes he'll go rummaging through books exclaiming "Tees! Tees!" (his abbreviation for "kitties"), and we always know exactly which book he's looking for. It's quickly become one of his favorites, for helping him settle into a much needed nap, but also just for fun.

We love this series. Most of the other books teach the children good behavior. I thought this book would role model good napping routines/behavior/benefits. Unfortunately, this story just repeats one narrative over and over: mommy cat tells kitty it's time for a nap, kitty says no until on the last page the kitty falls asleep in spite of herself. If anything it validates/reinforces resistance to napping.

As far as I’m concerned - this is a pretty lame book.... but I’m not a sixteen month old girl in love with cats. My daughter loves this simple book and gleefully says “MEOW!” and “Cat!” at all the appropriate moments. It’s not THE most calming nap book (try Verdick’s “Naptime” for that!)... but my daughter really loves the cat theme. So - it’s a keeper!

This was a very cute book. I bought it for my 4 year old granddaughter who loves cats/kittens and she fell in love with the book. She is also learning to read and this book serves her well with that. She had at first checked it out at the library but wanted one of her own so bad that I ordered one for her. Definitely a good book.

I bought this for my toddlers, and its a favorite already.We read it everyday, it's easy for them to understand and it's nice to look at ( over and over....)We plan on buying the whole collection of there books that cover sharing, picking up, and other little life lessons.

My oldest baby has such a hard time winding down for a nap, but using this book as part of our naptime routine has really helped. Cats are a favorite and helps to grab my little one's attention long enough for me to get things settled and calm. I definitely recommend this book for kids under 3!

read this before every nap. Our baby started loving these books from 2 weeks old. I am not kidding! The lessons are for an older child, but why not start teaching early. These books are colorful and simple. They are great lessons. He is 5 month old now and this one we read every nap. Little Monkey Calms Down is is other favorite. All you have to say is "Poor Little Monkey" or "Kitty, where are you..." and he gives a huge smile. LOVE these books!

Though the author and I are members of different faiths, we are both Christian women with a desire to serve our neighbor and deep love for Jesus Christ. While I don't know her well, reading this book made me feel like I was talking with a close friend and getting personal advice about how to love people in their trials. The writing in this book is calming and empowering. I was raised to take a casserole when someone was sick, and watch the kids of a young mom to give her a break. I was taught to not ignore the challenges of another but to acknowledge them and then spread the conversation to something else. But Alongside goes deeper. Included are adjustments you make depending on how close you are to one who needs support. Every chapter has a checklist with ideas beyond the casserole and the errands. I loved how this book made me realize that I CAN do more and that it's easy to do so. While we all know someone who has had a variety of challenges, this book has prepared me for the next one in new and powerful ways.

This book is full of practical ideas for coming alongside others during times of crisis, illness, and loss. Wanting to be of service is normal, but knowing how (and when) to serve is often challenging. With aging family and the likelihood of illness and/or death on the horizon, I really need some help figuring out the details of how to serve, not just offering to be there for others with no real actionable ideas of how to do that. Thankfully, Sarah loaded this book with both a big picture overview of coming alongside others AND lots and lots of specific actions to take (and not take!). This is going to be my go-to guide as I enter this new season of life.

This book is exactly what I have been looking for! I have often found myself in a position of desperately wanting to help someone through a difficult time and having no idea of what exactly I should do. I ordered this book on my Kindle but I will order another in print so I can have it available as an easy reference. I already want to read the book again and highlight all of the wonderful, caring and compassionate ideas that were provided. I have recommended this book to several of my friends as well.

Finally, an actual, practical guide to loving our neighbors...those we know well, such as family and friends, and those we hardly know. Sarah does an excellent job of encouraging people to reach out, no matter what the circumstances. I have underlined and highlighted portions of the book and know I will go back to review them in days to come. I have already used a couple of Sarah's ideas, and was glad for the reminder that it "is not about me" so that I focused less on what I was doing and more on the person I was loving. Loving our neighbors doesn't have to be hard. Thank you, Sarah, for the encouragement to follow through instead of questioning myself.

Sarah, thank you for writing this helpful, Christ-driven book. I especially appreciated Chapter 25 (Messy Situations) where you say, "These neighbors need us to walk alongside them even more." Having lost a brother to suicide, I agree that the need to reach out with Christ's love is amplified because many will choose to stay silent. Praise God that people are now educated to know that almost all suicides are the result of an underlying mental illness. Compassion is replacing condemnation. People's cards, their presence, their interest in talking about the fullness of my brother's life, were what helped me most. Thank you for encouraging people to ask for God's strength to step up to the messy situations.

Kind of a long read with repeated topics. It was helpful though in dealing with my Mom's cancer situation. Also good every day advise not to say "let me know what I can do" and to either be specific about what you want to do, or don't offer at all.

"Please let me know what I can do" is a pretty standard statement for many of us when we want to help in a time of need. Whether it is a family member or a neighbor in need, it has often been hard for me to know what specific thing to do to help. But it is so hard for others to ask for help, especially in a time of need. Sarah takes the guessing game out of it. If you can think of a scenario, she has got it! If you never knew what to do, she gives suggestions. This book is truly is a very helpful tool to get to the heart of the matter of our human connection with others. Sarah also shares beautiful and raw stories that take your breath away. It has been a blessing to me.

This book is like sitting with a group of friends sharing what worked and what didn't when you tried to help someone. Sarah communicates clearly and gives specific suggestions for a variety of situations. I appreciate her honesty and sense of self- deprecating humor. This is a book I will be recommending to friends. I want to be on the receiving end of all of the great suggestions some day!

I enjoyed all of the first three books in the Russel Middlebrook series, but I hate this one. Russel has turned into an obnoxious jerk who drops everything to chase after the scuzziest men he can find. He used to be charming, but now his quirks -- like saying something and instantly thinking the opposite (it's supposed to be cute), and breaking the fourth wall to ask the reader to back up what he's saying -- now are just tiresome and irritating. There are so many annoying holes in the stupid plot that I don't even want to keep reading. WHY won't Min tell Russel the truth about Kevin? How did Min and Gunnar get down from the roof of Leah's house after they'd broken in? I don't even care any more.This book isn't even about gay teenagers -- it's about a pretentious pseudo-environmental cult called freeganism that I couldn't care less about. I thought I'd found the perfect author in Brent Hartinger, and I was set to buy all of his books until I read this one. It's so bad I may not even finish it, much less buy any more of them. I definitely need a break from freeganism and the jerk Russel Middlebrook has turned into.

"The Elephant of Surprise" has been long anticipated by impatient Brent Hartinger fans - and many of us are adults who are more generally fans of YA novels. Do we hope to recapture our own teen years (why would one ever want to do that?); or is it simply that one never forgets one's teen experiences, whether good or bad, no matter how much of life we have lived since? Whatever the reason for our ongoing interest in YA novels, Brent Hartinger never lets us down.Russel Middlebrook is beginning to fully understand what he and his friends jokingly refer to as the elephant of surprise - the twists and turns that life throws at you, causing both happiness and pain, but also offering you adventure and excitement. For all the interaction with the "freegans" whose hidden world becomes a centerpiece of the book's action, the real narrative purpose of Hartinger's latest is to continue exploring the three "L's" of teen experience - Life as they are learning to live it; Love as they are struggling to understand it; and loyalty, as they test its boundaries and strengths. The new characters of Wade and Venus; as well as the long-standing figures of Kevin (Russel's ex) and Otto (Russel's current BF), each bring a different perspective to the straightforward complications of high school.Hartinger's voice is refreshingly crisp and bright. In a field full of endangered teens suffering terribly, Hartinger's characters know pain, but it is the typical pain of teen life. Russel Middlebrook and his best friends Gunnar and Min are vivid and clearly drawn. They are good kids, and intelligent; but they make stupid choices and think in remarkably illogical ways. Because, endearingly, all of these kids are just that - still kids. They still see life from that wide-eyed perspective of youth, all the while confident of their own wisdom and adorably clueless as to their own complete lack of adult experience. And that's the point: adult experience would hamper them, and it is the freedom of ignorance and hope that lets them grow and learn through their adventures.Of course, it is hugely important to me - and to many teen readers - that Russel is gay. So few YA novelists take the gay teen to heart, and Russel is a heroic figure simply because he is so normal. He has dealt with coming out, but still hasn't quite figured out love. On the other hand he is fully committed to his friends, and still yearns for life to be more exciting than it is. Hartinger's teens don't really relate to adults at all - they relate to each other and to the reader. So you have to read his books as a teenager, whether you are or not, since that's how you'll best appreciate its pleasures.

I loved this book which wrapped up the story arc of the teen romance of Russel Middlebrook and Kevin Land. Two lonely teenage boys both wanting someone to love and be loved by them in return. Russel, the first of the two to come out, was both loveable and annoying at times with his inability to grasp the difference between infatuation and real love until the end. Then their was Kevin, who took longer to come out, but understood the difference and recognized love can sometimes mean sacrificing your own happiness. It was Kevin's growth as a character that I found the most appealing in these books. Although I've read the author, Brent Hartinger, stated he would not be writing a stand alone volume of the story through Kevin's eyes I hope he at some point reconsiders. I didn't like this book...well no I tell a lie, I did like the last chapter where we see a closing point to Kevin and Russel, the rest I could have done without. Wow, these Freegans were nice, the most I met are a kind of crazy person who does not want anything to do with anyone who isn't into their life style. I had one pull a knife on a friend and I when we threw garbage in her dumpster behind her building..."How dare we dump trash on him when he was in there!" his words not mine. So I must say I was no intrigued by this whole premises in the book. So if I was to reread it i would just skim the Freegan parts and read the parts about Kevin trying to get to Russel. I am glad to know that in a few days the Russel stories will be continuing with Brent's new release on 12/15/14.

By now, just hearing that Russel, Min and Gunnar are returning in a new story makes me smile. I've really come to love these characters and enjoy the opportunity to reconnect with them in a new adventure.Elephant of Surprise is an enjoyable book. It may not have the impact that Geography Club or Order of the Poison Oak did, but it's a good book in its own right.Perhaps the greatest character in this fourth book in the series is Gunnar. It is from him that a lot of the humor and fun come, but that's not what makes him the most interesting character. He comes across as the guy who has all the answers, but he just doesn't know it. As far as I'm concerned, he is the "title" character.

They just keep getting better and better! I'm a sucker anyway for coming out stories, and have been delighted by 'Geography Club' and its sequels. It feels true to life, and the plot twists and turns are both unexpected and what happens in real life. 'The Elephant of Surprise' continues the story of Russel and his friends as he grows and develops in high school. Can't wait to read the next one.

The third edition of Roadside Geology of Colorado is far better than the first two. Adding color diagrams simplifies the charts and maps immeasurably. Color pictures of the rock formations are extremely good. Also,​ the clunky diagrams that looked like were made with a Sharpie pen have been replaced by a professional graphics artist rendition. The text also seems to be current. This is important since new geological discoveries are being made all the time. The Roadside Geology series has improved in the last ten years. I just hope that Wyoming, Texas, and New Mexico get the same treatment. Also, include Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas to the library. I recommend this book.

I admit it...I'm a geology geek. Having moved from (native) CA, where I knew the geology well, to Colorado, where I know nothing, I wanted some references. This book is perfect. Has enough diagrams and explanations, photos and locations of both easily accessed and visible, to build my understanding and knowledge.

I purchased these books in support of a vacation trip I and my daughter are taking in early June to the four associated states. I had long ago purchased the Roadside Geology of Massachusetts and Arizona texts, and enjoyed them also. The color plates in the Roadside Geology of Idaho and Utah texts were a great addition. It is too easy to visit a geological wonderland like these four states and not have a full appreciation for what is being seen. These books will help immensely with the travel experience, adding a depth and dimensional appreciation that can't be gotten from any other readily available source.Well done!

This book is really well done. I'm not a geologist or even an amateur geologist. It's well organized and very appealing as a reference while you're out, when you get home, and when getting ready for your next outing. Color illustrations and color photos of the rock formations you'll see.

Not a "Third Edition," as advertised, but - except for a paragraph on Snowmass and the colorized photos - this is - essentially - a page-for-page, word-for-word reprint of the Second Edition.

Excellent upgrade. My only wish is that they would also make this available in a Kindle version. Traveling across the U.S. requires carrying at least half my library of Roadside Geology, which is very unwieldy. In already have the entire set of Roadside Geology, but would gladly purchase the Kindle version, if it was available.

Bought this as a gift for my geology loving friend. One downside, she takes it everywhere we go reading to me as I drive.

Excellent and very readable review of the major features of Colorado's structural geology. Could use a bit more information on paleoenvironments and Colorado stratigraphy. This can be supplemented with online sources. Author's should allow purchase or download of some of the maps found within the book.
