Scholarly text on Jewish and Christian cultures as well as cultures that surrounded both Israel and the early Christian church. Many valuable insights are had. One point made by the author is that often we are quick to criticize the Pharisees and Jews of Jesus' day for their standoffish nature but are blind to our own cultural fixations which can be just as contrary to the call of Jesus. Another sticking point was that of God's blessing Jesus and telling the disciples to listen to Him, implying they should view the teachings of Jesus as superior to that of the views of the day and therefore apply them. One point of contention would be comments on the unity of the church. While there is a level of agreement, where would one draw the line regarding heresy. When a whole entity is outside the NT teaching, is one to willingly embrace them and commune with them? The author brings this up but, in my humble opinion, leaves the door too wide open.

This was one of the best books on the New Testament I have ever read. It was required in a seminary level New Testament survey course, and shed light on so many cultural dynamics at play in the biblical text. I highly recommend it!

Without the social and cultural backgrounds of the 1st Century, a New Testament reader will miss out, misunderstand, and even misinterpret much of the New Testament. deSilva brings this much needed information to the foreground, which will help clarify the New Testament to the honest truth-seeker. I especially liked his clarification of the Grace-gift (Gr. charis), which is too often interpreted as a one-sided coin that is only dependent upon God, without any required and/or expected responses by the recipients of GRACE. Excellent book, highly recommended for the inductive Bible student.

One of my favorite books. I learned a great deal about grace that I did not know before.

This book is helpful to the aspiring biblical scholar and to the Christian layman. It situates the Bible firmly in its 1st Century mediterranean culture, first by exploring the contemporary texts, then examining the scriptures. At the end of the chapters dealing with scripture, he briefly writes on the practical applications of this knowledge, which is particularly useful. Some feel that he wrecks his book this way, by forcing 1st Century culture into the service of 21st century protestant evangelicalism. However, it is always presented as either a way to fulfill the Great Comission or how to apply the New Testament, a group of books nearly 2000 years old, to our modern lives. I recommend this above Bruce Malina's "The New Testament World" because of its clarity and practical application, although both are wonderfully informative.

As the title of the book suggests, this book focuses on four main aspects of New Testament culture. As the headline of my review suggests, this book provides an enormous wealth of information in so doing. Specifically, the author discusses concepts related to the importance of honor and avoiding shame, descriptions of patron/client relations, common attitudes towards kin versus outsiders, and the importance of maintaining cleanliness and avoiding pollution. The author is knowledgeable and draws from an extensive range of sources to thoroughly expound on the specified topics. While the writing is clear and easy enough to follow, the text is a bit academic in nature and should not be considered a light read.It was exciting for me, but I'm a nerd.There were a number of topics discussed within the text that I found particularly enjoyable. Understanding first century Palestinian societies as being “agonistic” in nature, utilizing a challenge-riposte approach when vying for social status, brought a lot of clarity to the gospel accounts of religious authorities challenging Jesus in public spaces. Likewise, understanding how patrons would show “grace” to their clients and the clients would, in turn, respond by being “faithful” provided a new perspective for understanding biblical concepts of grace and faith. I found it intriguing that many ancient cultures would view the idea of treating kin the same way as you treat outsiders to be outright reprehensible and shameful – and it brings insight into how meaningful it was to consider fellow believers as family (fictive kinship). Considering purity laws as regulations supporting the orderly nature of things and the codified avoidance of what is seen as disorderly and out of place (“spit on the sidewalk,” for example) was very interesting, as well.I found the content on honor and shame to be particularly relevant to the current attitudinal climate concerning Christianity in the public square of the United States. Knowing the founders of my faith had to struggle against the current in their own culture, suffering slings and arrows of ridicule along the way, instills within me a sense of kinship with their hardships. In that sense, there is solidarity between us. When I suffer such ridicule, I can rest in the knowledge that I have not been alone in such suffering. In fact, being subjected to such shame should be in some sense normative for the Christian.This book is a delight and a gem. Reading it will provide greater insight into the culture and customs of second temple Judaism and first century Greco-Roman society, and how such customs are relevant to New Testament studies. If you're into that kind of thing, pick it up and give it a whirl.

Overall, I think this book is a great introduction to learning about cats' social behavior. It gave me a lot of information to work with to hopefully make my 2 cats' environment much more peaceful and much less stressful (though I certainly wish I had read this BEFORE adding a second kitty, but that's not the author's fault). The reason I am not giving this 5 stars is simply because it was published in 2004. Though much of the information makes sense and I don't think is necessarily outdated, I can't be sure because the book is 13 years old. A lot can change in that amount of time. I'd like to see an updated version of this book that mentions VCRs less and more modern resources more.I'd like to note that I've seen some reviews from people who were concerned about the amount of broadcasting of Feliway. I don't know if the author was compensated for advertising it, but I do know that around the time the book would have been written, synthetic pheromones were not a wide market. I'd be willing to bet Feliway was the only one of his kind in the early 2000s which is why it would be mentioned so much. Today, synthetic pheromones are in many different products from many different brands. Though, coming from someone working in the veterinary field, I would recommend sticking with the original Feliway brand. It's not a miracle worker, but you'd be surprised at what subtle things it can do for your cats' behavior.

This book provides some very interesting and accurate insights into cat behavior and psychology, and it will help many people owned by cats understand these infinitely fascinating animals much more.However, the reason I bought the book was in seeking a cure for "redirected/misdirected aggression". Mine was a situation where my big neutered male cat blindly attacked his adoptive "mommy cat" - a small, gentle female - because he couldn't get to the feral cat outside our yard that was marking his fence. But his blind, misdirected attack hurt her physically ($200 vet bill) and psychologically (breaking her trust...and apparently her heart), making her fearful of any kind of approach he made thereafter, which very unfortunately he then found entertaining, often resulting in more horrible fights.Despite the title, *Cat vs. Cat*, the book totally failed me here. I have found that many cat owners have suffered the same crisis without solution. In the two years since the one disastrous misdirected attack, I have found that undermining the male's dominance and arrogance by throwing him outside by the scruff of his neck (re-kittenizing him), squirting him with a squirt gun (at any suspicious move toward the female), and keeping them separated in the house when I'm not there to keep watch (especially at night), has decreased his aggressiveness and raised my female's confidence and feeling of safety. She seems to be surprised and quite gratified that her hissing and growling seem to be responsible for his sudden flight when my shots from the squirt gun hit him.We're still making progress, and after two years, they can actually be in the same room with me without incident. The male acquiesces to my calling his name immediately and stops moving. No, they're not as easily trainable as a dog, but they ARE trainable. He is not "broken in spirit" by any means. He still yowls and prods me for food, demands to be let outside, and purring into my lap, obstructs my work at the computer. But he KNOWS what he is NOT to do - move toward my female, stare at her, or make any sort of aggressive gesture (buy yourself a pack of cheap squirt guns!). I still have hopes that one day, she will choose to move toward him, and perhaps we will be a happy family again.BTW, I dumped the expensive chemical and aroma therapy approaches. They were of no help at all.

I have had a 16 year old single cat (and a dog) for 10 years and before I took her in she lived outdoors 24/7 and defended her territory tooth and nail. This book really helped me a lot when I decided to bring another year old stray into the household. Probably not the best idea for the older cat who was very defensive and afraid but the younger one was not going to make it for long on the outside. They may never sleep together or bathe each other but with the help of this book I have been able to help my older cat learn to tolerate the younger one so that they can at least live peacefully in the same house together. I didn't do everything the book said to, and it was a much bigger adjustment for both of them than I ever imagined, but I did a lot of it and the longer time goes on the better it gets for each of them.

I am currently trying to unwind some aggressive behavior among 2 resident cats, 2 new kittens, and the early introduction of a puppy. This book has provided more ACTIONABLE guidance than other books on this topic. I never knew about feline hierarchy in a cat tree or how a cat perceives his/her surroundings. Thinking like a cat has been very helpful. Distracting cats with play in the middle of an aggressive exchange and giving treats in a group is helping. I also took a hard look at some of the things I did wrong about their introduction (I put the kittens in my bedroom when I should have set them up in the neutral guest room). I swear my oldest cat’s source of aggression stems from that mistake. I could go on and on about this book. Great resource. If you buy one book on the topic of integrating cats with babies and dogs, this is it.
