I bought this for myself. The idea is nice, but the crossword puzzles especially aren't well designed. Sometimes there were blocks that should have been blacked out, but weren't so it looked like a letter belonged there. Also, it would have been better if the clues or word search words were more focused towards getting well or women/friendship. I think i would have enjoyed a generic puzzle book more, since I didn't have the sentimental attachment of someone else giving it to me. Also the page numbers for joke answers were wrong. It was easy to find the answers, since they were in the back of the book but just an example of poor design of this book in general.

Good assortment of activities for someone who is recovering from illness or surgery.

I am a college professor who teaches teachers. I am also an avid baseball fan with no more than a B average when it comes to sabermetrics. I try to get teachers to integrate baseball concepts into classrooms as a vehicle to teach their required curricula. This book is now required reading for its broad appeal regarding math, economics, problem-solving, logic and of course, snarky writing. The two sections are easy enough for newbies but still good refreshers for people like me who read books & blogs but not religiously. Part Three taps into Mr. Law's ideas about where baseball is headed with scouting & data, with front-office insights from baseball business people. Do yourself a favor and get this book. Buy a copy for that friend that talks baseball & goes to the games with you. It will add to your enjoyment & knowledge of the game - what more can you ask from a book!

As someone who worked in the industry (baseball analytics) in the past, I can't overstate how crucial this book is to understanding the state of play in baseball analytics. It's a clear, careful, and logical examination of how bad statistic lead to decisions, how the SABRmetric revolution matured to the point where it's now a part of baseball's establishment, and what the exciting Next Big Thing in analytics will look like. Law's a terrific writer who can communicate math-y concepts clearly and with a surprisingly amount of humor. I doubt that this book will be over any reader's head, and it easily could have been.Some folks seem to be disappointed that this book is not something it never set out to be: A new system for parsing existing statistics to more exactly rate who's good and who isn't. This is a book about how gleaning insight from statistics has gone from alchemy to a science to, well, something that's frankly incredible.

As someone who has read Keith Law for years (both on ESPN and his personal blog), I'm biased when I give this a 5 star review. I agree with his approach and analysis of the stats used in baseball circles for years and that the modern analytical tools give the game more depth and a truer picture of how the players perform. His take on stats such as RBI and Saves indicate how player analysis has been skewed for generations and how the ill conceived stats have shaped the game. For those new to his work, you may be surprised as some old ideals are pealed away and will learn of some new stats that are starting to be used with increasing regularity. But for me the highlight as usual with Keith Law is the wry sense of humor. I laughed for five minutes at a Salomon Torres joke that most will likely shrug by. Smart Baseball is a good look at how the perceptions the game are changing today and a peak into where the game is headed analytically.

It's a solid enough read but I'd say it's almost surelyonly for a serious or moderately serious baseball fan with a baseline knowledge of the game. It's also repetitive at times as there were exact sentences that showed up at various points in the book. On the other end of the spectrum if you are highly familiar with advanced stats and the like, I don't think you will get a ton of new insight. All that being said it's still an enjoyable read for the serious fan or a less serious one that wants to learn new things.

A great primer for the 'new' stats that add greater numerical description to the performance of a baseball player and team. Wonderful discussions around the old standbys (BA, ERA, etc.) and a quick look at new tools for performance analysis. A pleasant read for this retired math educator.

There are two things that are perfectly clear when you read "Smart Baseball": Keith Law knows statistics and he knows baseball. The book is perfectly organized -- here are all the old stats that you know and love (batting average, RBIs, pitcher wins, etc.) and why they're stupid (at worst) or misleading (at best). Having led you to that point, he introduces statistics that actually tell us something about players (WAR, OBP, OPS, etc.) and how they are constructed. All of this is done in a perfectly accessible way, whether you have a strong background in statistics or not. It reads quickly, but you never feel like something important is being glossed over.When Law starts talking about Statcast, the book slows down a bit. It's still good material, but almost feels "tacked on" to the rest of the book.The only bad thing is that once you've finished, watching games on TV with all the old statistics gets a little frustrating.

I'm an avid fan of baseball, and particularly baseball from a sabermetric angle. This book challenged me to think about the game in new and different ways, and the author did a superb job of explaining some of the current concepts in the game (such as ways to analyze defense) in an easily accessible manner.I can't recommend it enough for anyone interested in reading about how today's game isn't like the game we grew up with, and how that's a good thing.

I've been following Keith Law since he wrote for Baseball Prospectus. I pay for ESPN Insider mostly to read Keith's current work. This book does not disappoint. Keith has always had a nice, clean way of presenting often complex information and it comes to the fore in Smart Baseball. His experience as a scout, analyst and writer makes him the top baseball pundit currently working and this book is excellent reading for someone interested in how baseball has changed and how a layman can understand the new inner workings of the game.

A down to earth perspective on menopause from a reputable source. This book covers a broad spectrum of treatments for menopausal symptoms and at the same time affirms that this is a natural process. Based on my research this is one of the few books on the topic that does so, and it's only agenda is to help women be comfortable with this natural phase and inform them of their options. Please note this book was published in 2006, so there are no doubt even more options for medical treatment of symptoms.

Great reading again for a new generation of menopausal women. I look forward to an updated version listing the many beneficial effects estrogen has, now that we know how to live longer and we have equality laws, coed medicine (marijuana) and anti discrimination protectors in place. "Hooray for estrogen replacement therapy and " it will say...we also have reason to believe bio identical cannabinoids can decrease cancer producing cells. So, great book, look forward to an updated version

I questioned just a reading a book about menopause to understand what was happening in my body. However, I found OUR BODIES, OURSELVES: MENOPAUSE listed as a reference when looking for information about menopause via AARP. That was enough to tell me this book could be useful and I'm glad I ordered it. Before I read this, I knew nothing about what my hormones were starting to do, and having it all described here put things into perspective plus gave me references to look up answers for my questions. This book has already told me more about being female than my mother and my grandmother ever did!

As a woman who has an average grasp of science and statistics, I found the chapter on hormone therapy to be out of date and anti-pharmaceutical. A look at the WHI data charts and one could tell the sample size for the regressions was too small, i.e. the number of women who later developed a certain condition after HRT. Sample size has to be quite large in order to break down data into sub-categories. An example is the number of women over 65 who go on to develop dementia. There would be many other factors that could influence the outcome that were not screened for in simple division of the results into HRT and Placebo such as family history. Sample size needs be be large enough so that these other, possbily more important variables, would be not a factor.There was little mention of bio-identical oral progestin, specifically Prometrium, which is widely used. I expected a table with specific next generation pharmaceuticals, including Enjuvia. I concluded that this book needs an update on hormone therapy, and more science behind it.I also found the anti-pharmaceutical industry tone to be annoying. Many women are seeking current, informed reviews of hormone therapy so that they can themselves make informed decisions affecting their lives. This book does not provide this in its 2011 edition.

To learn one must play 100 times (+) and hope that LUCK is in the house or things can get depressin real fast or one can go to the source of knowledge. This book teaches the unitiated some fundamentals and strategies with wich to approach the table with a fair amount of confidence and with the right bankroll, for they say that without the proper amount of cash you are bracing yourself for defeat. Mr. Royer strikes as one of the good guides, he certainly knows his subject and his overall writing is quite enjoyable. After reading Mr. Royer's book I went to Las Vegas (my favorite!) and put into practice what I had learned from this book. I had my bearings about me and it lasted the better of 2 solid hours, in which in a 5 dollar table with the right conditions (Favoring the Player as much as possible, but of course!!)I won 185 dollars, after having lost and won my fair share of both. The point I am making is that without the book I definitely would have lost much more and not won anything. I gave him 5 stars for 4 did not quite do the job.I walked out a winner and realized that this is something I am actually enjoying. I always favored dices but Blackjack is a lot of fun!

The book itself was informative, although repeatitory. Could have said the same basic useful information in half the pages. The condition of the book was complete although the pages were yellowing on the outside. The turnover response from the seller was courteous,quick, and acceptable.

This book by Victor H. Royer is one of a great books about Blackjack. If you are serious about knowing the real truth of what Blackjack is all about, then you must have this book.Here you will find not only a terrific history of this great game, but you will find invaluable information about how the game is actually played in the casinos of the 21st Century. What you may have heard about Blackjack in the past, or perhaps read as recently as the last century, is no longer the case. What you see on TV about the various Blackjack card counting systems is also no longer possible under the majority of situations and circumstances, such as are the real truth of the modern casino.What you should know is Royer's tiered wagering method, and his new Modified Basic Strategy - MBS. If you want to give yourself the right chance to win money, then this is the book for you. It will pay for itself many times over in just your first trip to a casino.

My comment is not only about this great Blackjack book, but also about the reviewer identified as "munkmunk." All readers of that person's review of this book, or any other, should take note of what he says in the opening line to his review of "Playing Blackjack as a Business," by L. Revere, also posted here at Amazon. In that review, titled by "munkmunk" as "Sexist, thief, egomaniac?", the first line of his review says:"Not being "of age," and therefore not playing in a casino, I cannot say how much money one could make with these strategies."By his own admission, "munkmunk" is not of legal age to gamble. Therefore he is unable to understand the real world of the casino, and how and why strategies in this book, and the other by L. Revere, are applicable to those environments. Being so obviously out of touch with the reality of the world of Blackjack play in the casino, since by his own admission he cannot so legally play there being too young, this makes it plainly obvious that this young person merely has some anger of his own to grind, and seems to enjoy lambasting good books and the hard work by their authors. Amazon should perhaps be more careful, and not allow underage persons to so shamefully misunderstand books of these adult subjects.Additionally, we should all remember that the real world of the in-casino blackjack play is nothing like the "theoretical" world of the statistician, or mathematician. Furthermore, we should also understand that the minds of the very young often cannot grasp realities in either the "theoretical" or the "real world," and thus have significantly skewed opinions on something whose intended purposes obviously escape them, and whose principles are far too advanced for their undeveloped minds to as yet conceive.It should be obvious to everyone reading these reviews by the young "munkmunk" that they are a form of teenage angst, sadly directed at the authors of these good books on Blackjack.This book is a serious work about a serious subject, and extraordinarily well written -- but it is written for adults who will play in real casinos -- and not for angry children with a computer and nothing better to do than to express their ignorance in a public forum like these postings at Amazon.Read this book for yourself, and you will know why the other reviewers, including myself, have found this to be such a terrific, fresh, new look at a great old game.

I don't know what the other reviewers are smoking, but this is one of the worst Blackjack books I have read. Might as well take your 10 or 15 dollars and just throw it away. This book is almost 100% just random babbling, all words and no numbers. A HUNDRED AND NINETY PAGES INTO THE BOOK, BASIC STRATEGY IS THE ONE AND ONLY THING HE HAS ACTUALLY COVERED. I was disgusted when I looked at the page number and saw 190, realizing all this idiot had done was talk about what he was going to teach for over half of the entire book. He stretches five word sentences into page and a half long explanations to fill up space, and he does it quite well. This book is ridiculously stupid, I STRONGLY suggest reading almost any other book.

I bought the PDF version direct through the raywenderlich site, so I can't comment on things like binding, presentation, etc.The content is excellent, though. Despite the 'Advanced' title, this books is suitable for the novice (i.e, you've never used lldb before, and can't read machine code; that was me). I haven't yet worked through the entire book, but I've learned a great deal from what I have worked through, and I'm no longer afraid to fire up lldb and start trying to RE some code (suggestion: try working on your own code first, as it'll really help you to understand when you're going wrong).One of the reasons to buy it from the raywenderlich site is you get free updates to the pdf, and these include not only errata but new content from time to time.As a novice myself, I've no idea whether it's suitable for those that already know how to RE and debug with lldb, but it's great for those who don't. I'd only suggest you should have some experience of writing objective-c and/or swift code yourself.

This is the 5th copy of this book I have purchased. Now own the Kindle version. Anticipate this will not be my last purchase either.I keep gifting this to family & friends. I rarely write reviews.1). This book has gone through 14 editions, yet still has obvious typos within the first few pages. Unprofessional. They could have had a high schooler proofread it before publishing to catch these obvious typos.2). The book uses Gary Young’s Young Living’s proprietary oil blends. So if you would like to attempt to use this book as a reference, you are basically handcuffed to Young Living Oils.For instance, I looked up an oil blend called SARA(tm), so that I could see what it would take to recreate the oils blends from my own, extensive, high-quality essential oils which are NOT Young Living brand. It states, “SARA™ is a blend of Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Rose, Blue Tansy, and other oils.” So at first, it looked like a proprietary, and not transparently listed blend. I then looked at the ingredients list, and it stated, “Prunus amygdalus dulcis (Sweet almond) oil, Cananga odorata†(Ylang ylang) flower oil, Pelargonium graveolens†(Geranium) flower oil, Lavandula angustifolia†(Lavender) oil, Citrus aurantium dulcis†(Orange) peel oil, Cedrus atlantica†(Cedarwood) bark oil, Callitris intratropica†(Blue cypress) wood oil, Artemisia pallens†(Davana) flower oil, Citrus hystrix†(Kaffir lime) leaf extract, Jasminum officinale** (Jasmine) oil, Rosa damascena†(Rose) flower oil, Chamomilla recutita†(Matricaria) flower oil, Tanacetum annuum†(Blue tansy) flower oil, Citrus paradisi†(Grapefruit) peel oil, Citrus reticulata†(Tangerine) peel oil, Mentha spicata†(Spearmint) leaf extract, Citrus limon†(Lemon) peel oil, Ocotea quixos†(Ocotea) leaf oil, Nymphaea lotus** (White lotus) flower extract.”So although the oils are listed, it’s a blend of 18 oils, some which are quite uncommon, and it does not offer ratios for each. Yet, on page 6, the author states, “Essential oils have been used throughout the ages for healing, and the Bible contains 188 references to them.” Apparently, in biblical times, they didn’t need Gary Young’s oils for healing.If I want to hypothesize, the author was either too lazy to research the oils and their properties used in healing emotional patterns, or is simply a shill for Young Living oils.Disappointing. She has taken an already woo topic, and made it even less credible, and more “in your face marketing.”Too bad the oil for the “anger” emotion is a Young Living Brand blend. I’ll simply return this book.

I recently attended a workshop which included this book as part of Emotional balancing with essential oil. I found the information shared by Caolyn Main relating to the points on the body very helpful also useful in releasing emotional patterns which know longer serve our life. I found the book easy to understand also useful in my professional business as an Art of Life coach /Aromatherapist.

I have an older version of this book and just wanted a newer one! Good information and a lot to take in.

In love with this book! I purchased it after hearing several references to it on the Essential Oil Revolution podcast. which I highly recommend.. and i am so happy I did.

I loved this book. It tells you exactly what essential oils you should use for a specific emotion you might have and I found the information accurate. I would recommend this book and have given these as gifts.

Disappointed that this is just a major advertisement for Young Living. It’s completely useless if you do not buy their oils.

A must have book for emotional healing and essential oils. I wish the author would update the muscle testing section. New information and new pictures would be lovely.
