To give background, I took AP Statistics in high school and a more advanced statistics course in college. I bought this book as a refresher for some biostatistics research that I needed to do. Bad decision. The author needlessly complicates simple concepts by taking a paternalistic stance over the reader: "you're probably terrified by symbols, so let me mansplain statistics to you in a trite, disorganized, borderline-cutesy way." The author tries to reinvent the wheel in order to avoid the use of algebra, needlessly substituting symbols with silly nicknames and elegant mathematical summaries with rambling paragraphs. Most irritatingly, the author cannot write -- concision, organization, and clarity go out the window in this awful, error-ridden excuse for an educational text.If you already have a statistics background, I would absolutely NOT recommend this book. It's cheesy, it's poorly written (so!! many!! unnecessary!! exclamation!! points!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and so utterly inefficient as a review that I felt the need to open up the product page and spend fifteen minutes punching out this warning to potential buyers.

This book absolutely saved my life. I HIGHLY recommend it. I am a graduate student and wish I would have known about it during my undergrad! It reads more like a novel than a textbook, which helped me immensely. For anyone looking to have stats explained to you like you're having a conversation with a very intelligent, but very relatable friend, this book is for you!

It is loaded with formulas. Speaking as a biologist, that is a terrifying sight. I sort of expected a more verbal description, funny, friendly, like Robert A. Day's Scientific English which is really great. So I'm back to begging for help from our statisticians. Hope springs eternal that someone, someday, will write a statistics book for scientists.

Oh, man. I am not a fan of stats. Needed for a class. It is a good book though. Teaches hard to understand concepts in a understandable. way.

The book is written so as to understand and respond to questions we biologists rarely get from people in the field of statistics, especialy agronomists. I am a plant physiology researcher and many times I felt terrified to cope properly with the statistical standards of the college of agriculture and my biological point of view and results. Eventhough I have the basis for staistical analyses, at times I had to accept that the biological point of view didnot met the statistical standards. Now I am not confused anymore as differences are clear to me after studying the book thus I recommend the book as a very clarifiying guide to the experimenter specially in the biological sciences.

This is one of my go to references when I am running analysis or planning an experiment. I have always been really bad at remembering the tiny details in statistics, this book presents them in a way that is intuitive and easy to understand. Better yet it has deepened my understanding of some core concepts that let me choose the right statistical model and given me the tools to argue for why I chose that particular model. I would highly recommend as a desktop reference.

Very easy to follow and explains everything in a way that I can understand. It actually brings a great deal of fun and satisfaction to read and work through the text. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to really get their head around the inner workings of experimental design and agricultural based statistics.

This is far from my favorite Marsh mystery. Alleyn is Alleyn, and Fox (long overdue for promotion, surely) is along for the ride; but Troy makes no appearance. The setting is theatrical inasmuch as virtually all the characters are either "in" theater or attendants of those who are "in" theater. They behave very much like theatrical types from other Marsh novels. Apart from a short appendix, the novel covers a single day: it begins with the victim awaking on her (last) birthday and ends when Alleyn sends everybody home to bed after solving the mystery and explaining it to the former suspects. I found it hard to like the cast of characters--the ingenue's regarding them all with love was incomprehensible. The author didn't see much value in the victim's point of view (what her friends and associates were doing behind her back in her home on her birthday would have irritated most people). More balance would have made a better novel. But even a fair Marsh mystery is enjoyable.

None of the books by Ngaio Marsh that I have so far read would I rate as less than four stars. This one is quite the ride. Marsh's plots were always very well constructed; she sat down and thought through a way to present the murder as one no one could possibly have committed. In this book, even the victim couldn't have done it to herself. There's just that pesky dead body to prove that someone did.Roderick Alleyn is as always suave and debonair, and Inspector Fox is adorably himself. The obligatory pair of young lovers are well-drawn and exceedingly well integrated into the plot.If you like Marsh, you'll like this book.

Ngiao Marsh with her association with the theater has written a mystery that could easily be a play. All of the action takes place during one day and centers on two locations, a wealthy home and the neighboring book store. As in several works by Marsh the characters are actors, playwrights, and those they are close to.The story begins with an actress who on her 50th birthday imagines the grandeur of her own funeral. As the day progresses she flies into a rage at her theatrical associates at one perceived slight after another. The tension builds as the day goes on to the climatic moment, her birthday party. This being a mystery someone dies. Enter the detective who must unravel from all the half truths and secrets the who and the why. The novel is constructed like a clockwork providing enough information that the reader can unravel the puzzle if only she or he is looking in the right direction. Like a great magic trick.An intelligent and well written brain teaser, and a satisfying read.

What I like about Marsh books is that she usually paints us a picture of several characters before presenting the murder. In this book, this is particularly well done. One can see what is coming but it's like watching a head on collision, you can see what is going to happen but you know there is no way it can be stopped. This is rather a touching story in some ways and very enjoyable. I can't say I was surprised at WHO DONE IT as there is a small clue in the first part of the book but I still enjoyed very much the unwinding of the story. Marsh tends to let her detective be too long winded in his explanations but that's o.k.

This is Marsh at her best, describing the world and the people of the theater. Her character development always does ring true, but especially here, and especially in the case of the victim. If you love the grand dames of British mystery, you will want this one. If you have never read a Ngaio Marsh, you could not start with a better one than this.

These are actually really really cool, they come in a very hard start a box. I really like going through um they're kind of divided into subcategories. I have just recently got into ancient Rome. I can't believe that I used to think this kind of thing was boring when I was a teenager! If I only knew that the ancient Romans were sleazy, violent, promiscuous, and insane, I might have felt differently. A couple of months ago I was bored and I was looking on HBO for something to watch On Demand. I noticed that they had the entire series of Rome on there, and I remember thinking it looked kind of good. Well, from the first minute I was hooked. I quickly watched the entire series, and wanted to learn all I could about these fascinating people. Some books on this subject can be kind of dry, but definitely not this one. It's hard to believe that this happened two thousand years ago. It reads like the author was there herself. It's amazing how much has survived from that time. All the letters, and monuments, etc. And my favorite person has got to be Marc Antony. (And if you haven't watched "Rome" you need to watch it just for James Purefoy's performance of Marc Antony.)This book is so well researched and written it almost feels like a novel. Everything was so dramatic back then. And I always wonder if these people knew that they would be in all the history books, and be talked about for thousands of years. You can tell that the author loves ancient Rome as much as I do. I was so impressed with her writing that I went out and bought her book on the sinking of the Lusitania. (Which is three times as long as this book was, and I'm only about 1/10th of the way through it).I would recommend this book to everyone. You don't need to be a history scholar to understand it, and it doesn't read like a history textbook from high school, which, unfortunately, a lot of books on this subject do. I really enjoyed it, and I am glad that I bought it, so I can loan it to friends. I look forward to reading more from Diana Preston.

Diana Preston's Cleopatra and Antony: Power, Love, and Politics in the Ancient World is a well-told history of this infamous couple. The best parts of the book are the rich descriptions of the luxuries of Cleopatra's court. The days of feasting and debauchery are mind-boggling, even by the standards of today's college students. In one scene, Cleopatra bets that she can throw a meal worth 10 million sesterces, and then achieves this by throwing one of her diamond earrings into the vinegar!I wouldn't say there's anything particularly new or different about this book. In fact, it is really geared toward "popular" audiences (the first page even has a footnote that all dates are BC). If you're unfamiliar with the ancient world, this is a good book to start with. Preston gives a long and thorough "back history" of the Roman Republic and Ptolemaic Egypt. However, if you're a history buff, it might seem like there's too much general history, not enough detail about Antony and Cleopatra. For the latter audience, I suspect Adrian Goldsworthy's new Antony and Cleopatra would be a better bet.

Toga drama galore in "Cleopatra and Antony" by noted Oxford educated history Diana Preston. In 300 pages the author separates the two famous lovers from myth and gives us a portrait of two powerful personalities. Cleopatra was quite a dame! She was the last of the Ptolemaic dynasty of Greeks who had ruled Egypt since the death of Alexander the Great. She spoke seven languages, was well schooled and a good queen of Egypt for almost twenty years. Cleopatra was also a crafty political operative who quashed her younger brother's bid for power and was not adverse to killing opponents. Cleopatra bore a child by Julius Caesar. The boy named Caesaron would be murdered by Octavian's soldiers. Following Caesar's assassination in 44 BC she fled to Egypt. It was in Tarsus she first met by Mark Antony. Antony was a Caesar supporter who helped in the elimination of his assassins including Brutus and Cassius. Antony was a notorious womanizer, drinker and doughty warrior whose courage was real. He comes across as an earthy man who truly loved Cleopatra despite affairs with other women. He had three children by Cleopatra. His rival for Roman dictatorship was Octavian the grandnephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar. Octavian became the first Emperor of Rome following his defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at the decisive sea battle of Actium in 31 BC. Antony and Cleopatra chose suicide rather than capture and execution by the victorious Octavian. Antony died with a sword thrust; Cleopatra may have been bitten to death by an asp or cobra but her mode of death is unclear. Preston's book not only details in clear and understandable prose the political affairs of the volatile first century but also opens the door to Egyptian and Roman customs from sexual practices to religious beliefs.Diana Preston is not a specialist in the ancient world but writes for the educated general reader. Her book will both entertain and instruct the reader. An added bonus is the fascinating reconstruction of a bust showing what experts believed was Cleopatra's real life appearance. She was probably plump, hawk-nosed with an olive complexion. She died at only 39 years of age.

I really like this author and learned a lot from her. She sheds important light on online trollers that grew out of 4chan and ended up aligned with the alt-right. She has a few central arguments: 1) that transgression is the foremost value of channers and they picked this up from modernist critics (who were usually on the left); 2) that the virulent anti-feminism of channers grew as a reaction to something called "Tumblr feminism," which started on line and then jumped to university campuses; and 3) that 4channers are "beta" males who feel sexually insecure in a post-sexual liberation world where the rewards have gone disproportionately to the top "alpha" males. She also opens with a broadside against the digital utopians who might persist in believing that online "crowds" are a force for the good -- that, she says, is so 2010.But this book is a quickie book, rushed out so quickly that no one bothered to proofread it. The author doesn't even take the time to tell you the name of books that she quotes from at length. This quick-and-dirty approach might be a wise publishing decision, given how quickly online trends come and go. But this is a book after all and it's not unfair to bring to it greater expectations than one would to a magazine or an online post.So, on the positive side, I like the author because she was a strong point of view. She advises progressives to abandon "transgression," which is simply a-moralism; she implies feminism needs to get over the trigger warning/safe space BS; and she believes that a progressive politics needs to put less emphasis on identity and identitarian politics. I don't agree with her in all respects but I appreciate her willingness to take stands.From the fairly casual style and lack of any footnotes or bibliography -- and, indeed, from her willingness to take stands -- I took her to be a journalist or freelance critic. So I was surprised to learn that she's an academic. Learning that made me wish she'd displayed some of the virtues of academic writing. For instance, she doesn't tell us anything about the research on which she bases her observations. One assumes she spent a lot of time on social media, Tumblr, and perhaps IRC channels, in reddit forums, or whatever. But she doesn't bother to share that with us. I think it matters. For instance, what do we actually know about these guys (including the assumptions that they are all guys)? Who are they and where are they? The author is Irish but an awful lot of this book is about the US. Why not address the limitations (and potentials) of this sort of limited online research?A yet bigger problem for me is that, despite her interest in the alt-right, she really drops the ball on the issue of race. She focuses instead on the gender side of this problem because that's what she knows best. I suspect this is because she feels much more confident around gender issues. She clearly finds it easier to criticize Tumblr feminism and the influence of Judith Butler than she does the other much maligned "social justice warriors" concerned with mass incarceration, extrajudicial killing of black people, intractable racial disparities, institutional violence, etc. But haven't they played a big part in campus "anti-free speech" politics on university campuses today? And haven't they too raised the hackles of the newly emboldened on (and off) line racists? And why are young women attracted to these alt-right groups?Finally, geography and culture matter. The author makes little of the fact that she is Irish and writing in Ireland. It's as if in writing about online groups, history and specificity disappear. But, as someone reading in the US, I've got to say: history matters. Is Tumblr feminism universal? Did the alt-right play a part in Ireland's recent elections? Does "free speech" mean the same thing on an Irish campus as it does in the US?But it's really the race issue that rubs me the wrong way. Nagle can't expect anyone to think she's come to terms with the alt-right based predominantly on her interest in its anti-feminism.In the end, I find Nagle strong, intelligent and nervy, but her interpretations in the end don't address the marriage of 4chan and the alt-right in the past few years in a way that satisfies me. For that, she needs to go deeper, wider -- and to wander offline. And she needs to admit what she can and cannot know using the methods she employs.

Honestly a great starting point for trying to really understand the parts of the internet a lot of us have spent the past several years trying to pretend doesn't exist. This book is brief and like several reviews have said, probably could have stood one more editing pass, but I personally didn't mind because I can tell it's going to send me towards more research. It has felt nigh impossible over the past few years to keep up with break neck speed of the internet as it has morphed into more and more of a demon day by day, and Nagle is the first person I've found who really starts to put the whole web together in a coherent way, to demonstrate how seemingly disparate parts of the internet pollinate and overlap. By the end, the book put me in a perplexingly existential place, making me reconsider how I engage with the internet as a whole on a political level but also on a basic moral one. If you ascribe to the Mark Fisher "Vampire's Castle" view of the politics of the internet, you already have the sense that the culture of the web as a whole has become toxic, not just in the chauvinistic, openly sexist corners of the web. I know Nagle herself is pretty disdainful towards South Park but I thought the 20th season was the first work of fiction that truly tried to capture the strangeness of the internet, and the terrible people we can become when we feel properly shrouded in anonymity. This book is the first work of nonfiction that does the same to me, even better than Jon Ronson's "So You've Been Publicly Shamed", which I also enjoyed. A book I'd highly recommend, especially to any Grey Wolves currently reading this.

There is a decent summary of history here, but the organization is haphazard and Nagle writes in an annoyingly imprecise tone. As others have said, it's obviously thrown together, and those who take these issues seriously may be better off waiting for a more serious tome. Those who are simply looking to understand what 4chan is and what to make of various memes may find it useful.I wouldn't begrudge Nagle for throwing together a short and shaggy book on such an important topic if her analysis were more trenchant. Instead, it veers between half-baked and impossible. For example, while Nagle repeatedly describes the 4chan culture wars as making Trump's candidacy possible, but also repeatedly use articles describing leftist non-supporter of Hillary Clinton as sexist as examples of the extreme "SJW left" that apparently stoked the rise of the alt-right. However, these arguments were overwhelmingly formulated mid to late in the 2016 election cycle or after the election; how can these particular articles be characteristic of the "culture war" that laid the groundwork for that very election? Indeed, Nagle does not seem to understand the variations on the left between "SJW"s and centrist Clinton supporters and black Democratic loyalists (hint: very few of the latter two are gathering on Tumblr). Indeed, Nagle's obvious devotion to segment of the socialist left and her contempt for any other has other strange results: at one point, she excoriates Vice Magazine for publishing an article calling Sanders supporters "brocialists" as if this were as serious an indictment as the magazine's past affiliation with alt-right organizer Gavin McInnes.Aside from the sloppiness of Nagle's examples, her analysis often seems to slip into accepting many of the tenets of the alt-right ideologies she means to analyze. She repeatedly and breezily refers to the 'failing mainstream media", sounding almost like a Trump tweet. And her central thesis is that the contemporary alt-right originates from an online culture war with SJWs, but Nagle's analysis continually describes the SJW side as already-formed and the alt-right as emerging as a reaction to its obvious extremity and injustice. This facile analysis fails to explore how SJW and alt-right cultures may have shaped each other, or how both emerged at roughly the same moment within a particular context and set of tech platforms. And by placing the alt-right in the reactive role, Nagle displaces responsibility--I'm not a fan of SJW call-out culture, but it's implausible to put it in the causal role here. This analysis also passes over the question of how the alt-right draws on traditional forms of populism, racism, sexism etc., or how reacts of social change unrelated to Tumblr. It's understandable that Nagle can't take on such a task in this little book, but by elevating her narrow focus--the role of online cultures in sharing the alt-right--into the explanatory framework for the origin of the alt-right, Nagle commits herself to a superficial and implausible thesis.
