The interaction between Buddhism and Taoism has always been a subject of great scholarly interest, but it was not until the last two decades that we have seen a major shift in the attitude toward the nature of the relationship between these two religious traditions. As the title of her book suggests, Mollier's agenda is to portray the relationship of Buddhism and Taoism as an adversarial one, in which each tradition uses the popular ideas of its opponent in order to attack and eventually replace it. Mollier's book is an important to the growing field of Buddho-Taoism for a number of reasons. Not only does she provide accurate and fluent translations of influential sutras and scriptures that have never been studied before in the West, she is also successful in showing the significance of popular religious practices, such as rituals and the use of talismans. Mollier's sensitive analysis of the competition between the two main religious traditions to win the hearts of potential followers reveals to us the various techniques used by religious experts in the daily life of commoners without dismissing them as folk religion. Moreover, she shows the important role played by ritual in the life of the common people who were not exposed on a daily basis to scriptural doctrine. After decades in which most scholarly attention was directed toward the study of canonical texts, books like this, which try to map out the actual religious scene of medieval China, are a welcome and refreshing addition to the field.

While written from an academic point of view, this book serves the reader well in understanding the dynamics of both schools of thought. This is the most objective viewpoint I have found when discussing the interrelationship of Buddhism and Taoism. This is not written to affirm any belief system but to explain how the past integral growth of the two schools is still with us today. This is not a religious or philosophical text. It made me laugh sometimes when I realized how much I still do not know.

Mollier surveys a few of the 40,000-odd manuscripts found in a sealed chamber at Dunhuang, with a particular eye to the relations between Taoism and Buddhism.Against a background of interfaith rivalry (in which Taoists could depict Lao-tzu reincarnating as Buddha to convert the foreigners, whilst Buddhists had Lao-tzu as Buddha's disciple) she unpicks some interesting stuff about similar doctrines appearing in the texts of the two different faiths. It's more likely the Buddhist versions were adapted from lost Taoist versions, since concepts like "Pacifying Houses" and "Yang" (as in "Yin-Yang") have much longer history in Taoist traditions.

It is every bit as delightful and fun as the other book...worth the expensive price, as the illustrations are so unique and detailed.

I have loved this book for years. I use to read it to my students, and now I read it to my grandchildren. The story has a very fun twist to it.

My father wrote 13 children’s books and was an amazing illustrator and it’s nice to see that his work lives on through Amazon.

After course review:This book can feel like a chore to read at times and appears come off as a sociology book in disguise. Nevertheless, engineers cannot escape from writing or reading. The classic cases of engineering ethics are present here and the matters are explained with sufficient detail. Challenger, Columbia, Katrina, Pinto, and Citicorp to say the least. There are also more cases at the end to write research papers on. Altogether, I have to say, this book and course are an impact that broaden and conscientize the engineer or any profession for that matter. .

I didn't open this book for the course more than once. That was a futile attempt to find a reference for one of the course papers. That is when I realized that the instructors weren't really following the book at all and we only bought the book because one of the authors was an instructor. My personal class notes were a far better resource and I ended up with an A.It's also way too small for the price. I've read longer novels that were a 1/10th the price of this one. Not to mention, it's paperback too. I was shocked when I got it and realized I paid $120 for that. I bought 2 other books, both 3 or 4 times the size, in better condition, and in hardback, and they were cheaper!Maybe it's a great book when it's actually used right, but it wasn't used right for me. It was also way too expensive. This book is maybe worth $20 or $30 at most.

Book isn't terrible, but can be painful to read at times. The authors seem to be "beating a dead horse" with a lot of the topics covered in this textbook. I am sure it is not the worst textbook on the subject out there, but I can almost ashore you that there are much better out there.

It worked ok for my ethics class.

Expensive and not useful, don't buy unless you really have to.The book is mostly case studies and does not offer helpful suggestion into ethical practice.

As someone who loves Deadlands Classic so much that he's actually going to great lengths to get everything related to it in print, you could say that I'm a slight fan of the setting that Shane Lacey Hensley created back in 1996. As the huge fan that I am, I honestly love everything Deadlands-related. This is no exception. John Goff also worked on the old Deadlands and Deadlands Reloaded, so those that see a different name than Hensley and are apprehensive, there's no need to be. Deadlands Noir is truly a campaign setting in top form. The game has changed as much as the world has, although it still keeps that same type of feel that Deadlands is so well-loved for. Hucksters are now Grifters, con men that swindle the manitou out of their powers to use as their own. However, this comes at a price. Mad Scientists have basically unionized and are now Patent Scientists, with the risk of insanity being drastically lowered. Harrowed make a return, and are just as great as before. The setting for this book is 1935 New Orleans, but the Noir Companion has rules and descriptions and set-up for all the other major cities of North America all the way up to the '50s. That being said, this book is fantastic and does a wonderful job of filling you in on the ins and outs of the new world. There's even a large part of the book devoted to familiarizing yourself with the city of New Orleans, as it's the main setting of this book. There are even a few sample adventures, with a campaign-length one as well that does an amazing job of introducing players to the world and the tone. I'm sure this all sounds like hyperbole, but believe me, Deadlands Noir is a masterfully done piece of work, and even if you weren't fond of the Weird West, then you may well like the Weird World the series has built with this and Hell on Earth.

Great condition. I like the setting. About the only drawback is you need a separate for cities other than New Orleans. Other than that pretty damn good.

This is a setting done right. Imaginative, dark, pulpy and flavoursome. Even if you're not using the Savage Worlds system, there are plenty ideas within this book that can be mined for any Noir-styled game. Highly recommend it, and I'm hard to please. Goes well with the Noir Companion too.

The setting is updated from the 1877-80s to the 1930s, taking place just after prohibition.The changes the the timeline in the weird west setting show, The Confederacy never accepted prohibition, for example.The book details New Orleans specifically, and it's included campaign expects you to play there. Later products would go into detail about the rest of the world and give campaign hooks for elsewhere, but the main book on its own is specifically in the Big Easy.Please note that this game is not a complete game on its own. You must have either the Savage Worlds or Savage Worlds Deluxe rule book to play this game, but it is easily acquired in small print format for about 10 bucks, and you can always download a basic version of the rules, known as test drive rules, for free on the publisher's website.

I seldom review anything, but thought it my duty to ding this one. The author is barely literate in English and writes like it's a second language. The "booklet" - because it's VERY short - is littered with typos and could have done with an editor. While I was hoping to get some layman's language information about Hep C itself, the only information here is about the 4-5 main treatment medications, with an emphasis on the generic Harvoni available from India. It reads like a shill from that pharma company. Don't waste your time or money - you can get better information about the meds.

The writer speaks from her heart. She outlines every aspect of the disease and the process she went through to get her medication. She's definitely not a native English speaker but she gets her point across. My husband and I went through the same channel as the author suggested and we received our meds and are now cured. Our SVR is good and its already been a year since we finished treatment. The non profit Soul of Healing Trust and Sunnypharma.org sites are down but I called the number 858-952-1077 and got through. I guess their new website is sunnypharma.infoWe are just happy we are over this disease, finally. Exactly as the title says, zero help from insurance.
