Summoned from Florence to Rome in 1508, Michelangelo found himself on the losing side of a competition between architects and the victim of a plot "to force a hopeless task" upon him-frescoing the vault of the Sistine Chapel. How the sculptor met this painterly challenge is the matter of this popular account, which demythologizes and dramatizes without hectoring or debasing. Forget cinematic images of Charlton Heston flat on his back-Michelangelo's "head tipped back, his body bent like a bow, his beard and paintbrush pointing to heaven, and his face spattered with paint" is excruciating enough to sustain the legend. King (Brunelleschi's Dome) re-creates Michelangelo's day-to-day world: the assistants who worked directly on the Sistine Chapel, the continuing rivalry with Raphael and the figures who had much to do with his world if not his art (da Vinci, Savonarola, Ariosto, Machiavelli, Martin Luther, Erasmus), including the steely Julius II. King makes the familiar fresh, reminding the reader of the "novelty" of Michelangelo's image of God and how "completely unheard of in previous depictions of the ancestors of Christ" was his use of women. Technical matters (making pigments, foreshortening) are lucidly handled. As a new art student I've taken a real interest in the lives of artisits. This has been one of the best books so far. What I really liked about this book was the fact you didn't have to know anything about Michelangelo or the time period to enjoy and understand this book. It's more than just the story of the Sistine Chapel, it also goes into the things that were going on around Michelangelo while he was working on it. It also gives you some insight as to how he felt about himself (not the nicest guy) and how his confidence grew inspite of the fact he was competeing with Rapheal (who was a nice guy)and other factors including the weather and the effect it was having on the ceiling. If you want a good all around book on Michelangelo this would be a really good one to start with. My only complaint is it could of had a few more pictures of some of the paintings described in the book.

Pope Julius II was a fastidious man whose eye for the arts was always set on his lofty standards of beauty and perfection that few artists could satisfy. So when the pope saw the Pieta whose beauty surpassed the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures adorning the tomb of a French cardinal, he wanted the same awe-inspiring adornment for his tomb, whereupon one Michelangelo Buonarroti from Florence was summoned for the commission for the work. From then on, that’s how Michelangelo at age thirty-three reluctantly embarked on his Herculean task of frescoing the vault of the Sistine Chapel. This book by Ross King recounts such background stories of the making of the Sistine Chapel frescoes and descriptions of the personal traits of Michelangelo.Michelangelo’s work on the frescoes resulted from part Divine Providence of endowing the humanity with an awe-inspiring masterpiece of art to delight the senses of mankind through the ages and part secular ambitions to mark the names of both the commissioner and the artist themselves. Pope Julius II also wanted to renovate the Sistine Chapel that had been used as a living quarter for the guards, a fortress against papal enemies, and a jail. As no one pours new wine into old wineskins as said in the bible, the pope’s plan to revert the chapel to its original place of worship, which made him drop his tomb project, was met by his idea of frescoing the vault in its entirety. Michelangelo, who was a breadwinner of his family, accepted the commission with sumptuous amount of salary and commenced four-year of labor of woes and dramas on the vault of the chapel.There are revealing truths that should be known concerning the process of frescoing the Sistine Chapel as follows: Contrary to popular belief that Michelangelo did the work while lying prone on his back, he worked with his upper body bent backward like a bow. Also, it wasn’t done by solely by Michelangelo but a work of concerted efforts made by a contingent of his assistants chosen by Francesco Granacci, a close friend of Michelangelo. Michelangelo was innately a solitary worker who had a strong distrust of others who worked with him. As a matter of fact, Michelangelo was never a jolly fellow whose sociability would have endeared him to all, as in the case of his contemporary Raphael Sancti.It is also interesting to pay special notes on the figures Michelangelo used for the frescoes, which shows his ingenuity of selecting unique subject matters distinguished from his contemporaries. To illustrate, he used 7 prophets from the Old Testament and 5 sibyls from pagan myth to decorate the Sistine vaults. He was fascinated with prophetic knowledge of the sibyls who dwelled in sacred shrines and predicted the future in fits of inspired madness. This offered a compelling link between the sacred and the profane, the church and the esoteric pagan culture by reconciling pagan mythology with orthodox Christian teachings.From this book, readers will find that the position of a painter/sculptor was not esteemed highly; he was more of a skilled laborer, a craftsman, given exact orders how to produce his work by his commissioner or patron. However, I could not help but feel a subtle tone of anti-papacy or even a remote sense of anti-Catholicism in this book. Evidently, there were corruptions among the church officials, clerics, not to mention the laypersons. But I wonder if King should have spent several chapters about Pope Julius II to discern just what kind of person he was in a negative shadow, the fallacy of his character, of the papacy in general. I ascribe such tendency to culturally transmitted anti-Catholicism in England, a home of the Episcopal Church, from the time of Henry VIII because this is not the first time I recognize such sentiment in English writers.Notwithstanding the above sentiment, the book has its magical way of transporting readers to Italy in the early 16th century and invites readers to meet with Michelangelo as he was in his disheveled hair and untidy outfit dripped with colors from the unfinished fresco. Despite all his personal foibles, he is indeed a person bizarre fantastico whose muscular nudes in frantic but graceful gyrates have both the beauty and the sublime that produce in the spectator a kind of astonished wonder so formidable and so fantastic throughout the ages.

The topic of this book is an artistic and historic blockbuster: Michelangelo's famous frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The author tells the story in great detail -- arguably in too great detail. Every artist and assistant artist and many of their relatives and patrons are given, along with their towns and some of their history -- often with little relevance to the story. This is a lot to wade through and is more than is necessary. Their names are long and hard to pronounce, at least for a non-speaker of Italian. There is a fair amount of repetition as well. For example, we are told at least three times that, contrary to (supposed) popular belief, Michelangelo did not do his painting solo and while lying on his back (as in Irving Stone's "The Agony and the Ecstasy"): He built elaborate scaffolding to make his work and that of his assistants easier. We are told about the sexual reputations of not just Michelangelo (meh) and Raphael (stud), but of many of their friends and associates. This sounds promising but is actually not that explicit and hence a bit disappointing when the book could have used a bit of pizzazz...Arguably, the person who has the most developed and interesting character is not the artist but the man who commissioned him: Pope Julius II -- a domineering and vain and aggressive person, who was perhaps more interested in the power struggles among the Vatican and the Italian city-states (and against France) in the 16th century than in the finer points of the Catholic faith. We never get a definitive idea of how Michelangelo himself felt about Julius -- though it seems negative in balance. We also don't get much info on Michelangelo's attitude toward religion, though it is suggested that he was a believer (with little supporting evidence).Although the book is about Michelangelo as a painter, he considered himself primarily a sculptor (and is perhaps remembered that way). Yet there is not much about his work with stone and its relation to his painting.One of the book's major shortcomings is the lack of good illustrations. There are just a few color plates and not that many black and white ones. I had to go to the Wikipedia entry on the Sistine Chapel to get decent close-ups so I could follow the descriptions in the text. The author should have included at least this link (and probably others that might be even better). The author's analysis of the frescoes artistic features does not seem authoritative and at times seems sketchy. Of course, to be fair, there are plenty of expert analyses to be had.I had previously read the author's "Bruneleschi's Dome" which is more streamlined and easier to digest. "Pope's ceiling" was, though interesting, rather ponderous. Sometimes less is more as they say.

Sir Alex Ferguson is a former Scottish player and manager who managed Manchester United from 1986 to 2013. His time at the club has led to Ferguson being regarded as one of the most successful, admired and respected managers in the history of the game. On May 8, 2013, Ferguson announced his retirement as manager of Manchester United. During his 27 years at the club, he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier Leagues and two UEFA Champions League titles. Sir Michael Moritz is a venture capitalist and chairman of Sequoia Capital, the original backers of Apple, Cisco, YouTube and WhatsApp; he has also served on the board of directors of Google, LinkedIn, PayPal and Yahoo!. He is a former journalist with Time Magazine and author of the first history of Apple, The Little Kingdom. Originally from Wales, he lives near San Francisco, CA.

Not a book on leadership about Ferguson. Mostly about playing and coaching career. Talks briefly about his leadership beliefs and styles. Not expecting drills but maybe a little insight how he handled some difficult situations with top players.The author talks more about himself and his multi trillion dollar invest company. I felt the author loves to talk about himself so much he couldn’t find enough listeners that would pay attention to him for weeks. So he wrote a book about an iconic figure so he could hold you hostage to hear himself write about himself. The last 30-40 pages were nothing about Ferguson but billion dollar silicon valley companies and how he has made billions off this. Please buy this book back

Sir Alex Ferguson managed a great football club as Manchester United, but it was he who made this team that great. The first thing that made him so successful was that he followed an advice that he should have been on the sidelines watching and supervising. In this way he was able to see the big picture. He was well aware that the system in a football club is not so complicated as in a high-tech company. Despite his spectacular accomplishments, he's too humble to say that he could be more successful.I find it funny that he thought swapping shirts were extravagance and told the players that they needed to pay from their pockets for the shirts they would swap. I think this character trait comes from his Scottish genes.This is not just a football book, but also a resource we can draw lessons about our own lives at the same time. The only thing I criticize in the book is the strained effort of the author to draw analogy between the principles and thoughts of Sir Alex and the successful firms in the Silicon Valley.

Fantastic book written from a different perspective on one of the greatest man managers and leaders of all time. Sir Alex was relentless, smart, intuitive and build team after successful team restoring Manchester United to their historic glory and status. There are golden nuggets of experience and strategies contained within that are priceless. Fabulous read for the football fan or business man, anyone who wants to learn how Sir Alex built success and maintained such high standards year after year.

I enjoy this book tremendously. Not just because I'm a soccer junky but because it goes beyond success on the football pitch and addresses what it takes to be a good leader in any industry. This book is great for the soccer mad fan that wants some inside access to the dynasty of Manchester United. It's also fantastic for the person that wants to get more out of themselves and their life. I loved the football but my favorite chapter may be the epilogue comparing Sir Alex and European football to the cut throat world of high tech Silicon Valley. Enjoy!

The Guyanan intellectual Walter Rodney wrote this book directly after the 1960s wave of African independence declarations, to show why Africa was so underdeveloped compared to the 'First World', and who was to blame for this. A consistently intelligent and politically involved Marxist thinker, Rodney was one of the second generation of black socialists to write about African issues, after the tradition of CLR James and Eric Williams, the former of whom tutored Rodney. "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" is probably Rodney's magnum opus of popular science, aimed at a general public, and very accessible and informative.Rodney describes in chronological sequence the development of Africa as a continent and the way in which the Europeans interfered with it. Going from the earliest African empires and states and their social relations, via the first wave of slave-trading, to full-blown colonialism, Rodney shows us how Europeans consistently attacked, pillaged, exploited, suppressed, enslaved, divided and discriminated against Africans, and the enormous impact the various stages of slavery and colonialism had in destroying the indigenous opportunities for coming out of feudalism into capitalist and industrialized societies. It is truly remarkable, given how short a time Africa has had to develop on its own as a modern society, how quickly African states have been able to modernize, and how strong the resilience of the various African peoples is to the enormous destruction they have had to endure. Rodney shows us all this with excellent writing and sensible use of 'bourgeois' sources, allowing the interested layman to gain all the necessary broad background information on the history of European involvement in Africa.Of necessity, the book is sometimes rather annoyingly concise and vague about the specifics of colonial policies, destruction of early indigenous development etc., things about which one would want to know more. Rodney provides a reading list for more information at the end of every chapter, but since this book is from the 1960s, it is dubious whether such lists are still useful considering the improvements made in radical scholarship on Africa since. The timing of the book also makes it such that there is practically nothing on African states since independence, as most independence declarations had happened only shortly before its publication. Moreover, Rodney is very saccharine about the influence of the 'socialist' states such as the USSR and China on Africa, which he exclusively paints in positive terms. Certainly the Leninists have had a vastly better influence on African development than any Western nation ever has, but the USSR and China had their own interests to defend in Africa as well, and were not there purely for humanitarian purposes, as Rodney sometimes makes it seem. Nonetheless, this is a good general book on the legacy of European destruction in Africa, and it thoroughly refutes all the common arguments in defense of colonialism in that continent.

If you want to know more about the colonization of Africa and how this stopped Africa developing then this is a good book. Unfortunately because it was written many years ago it really doesn't get into much about what has happened in Africa since colonization has ended.

Maybe every other parent already knew this, but this is a shorter version of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, not a different book. If I had taken the time to really pay attention, I would have noticed that, but it was offered as part of a three pack with Chicka Chicka 123 and the full Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and I just clicked to buy all three. Spoiler alert: it is much better than the long version, especially for bedtime, so I kept it.

My son loves Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. I bought the paperback copy for him before he was born, but when he started picking out the books he wanted me to read him, he also started ripping the cover up. I figured a board book would work better, and hopefully discourage tearing up all of his books. So, I bought this. Without really paying attention to what I was buying. It's only half of the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom story, which is a little disappointing, but my son doesn't really care. I know the story by heart, anyway, so I can just finish if he doesn't lose interest. It's also not as indestructable as I had hoped. All of his other board books (including some second-hand books from friends/family) are doing well. This one was really easy for him to tear up (mostly the binding). Maybe it's because it's one of his favorites? I don't know. It's a great book, and I don't regret the purchase since my son loves it. I just wish I had paid closer attention to what I was buying.

I should have read the other reviews before purchasing. I was buying this for my 4 year old who loves Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, I saw it was a board book and thought great this one will hold up better than his last copy as we have gone through 2 already since he reads and takes it every where with him. However this is not the full book and only the 1st half of it. So I now have an upset child because it isn't the full book and only the beginning.

Love the book. But please dont order this and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom... It's the same story. Boom Boom is just more fleshed out.

This is a nice book and it is a fun read for ages 1 to 5 probably. However it does not have the whole alphabet at the end of the book on two pages together, which is what I was hoping for. So I was very disappointed about that and actually ended up ordering the regular chicka chicka boom boom because I saw online that it has the whole alphabet together. I am a teacher and I want to teach my almost two-year-old the alphabet but it's very hard if you don't have it the whole thing in front of you. So, I would recommend either buying the regular version of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom instead of this one, or both because this one is easier to get through for little kiddos. Overall, it is a nice book though, if you just want a quick and easy read with learning included.

Great kid's book. This js the board book and my only complaint is that it doesn't have the part about the momma and poppa coming and helping when everyone falls out of the tree. Maybe that is just part of the song though and not the book. This our first book.

Warning** this is NOT chicka chicka boom boom. It's basically the 1st 1/2 of the book only. I always read reviews before purchase and for some reason I didn't this time :(Cute for what it is but I'd rather pay the extra dollar or two and get the whole book.

This book was given to my daughter when she was 9 months old. She immediately loved it. She is now 13 months and she still loves it. We have now purchased over 5 of these to give as presents to others. This is the BEST Chicka Chicka book, I regret purchasing the 123, it's not as good and the children do not seem to like it as much.

This book is a must have for the start of a new year. Normally I try to get one from the library but I have to get one really early (November) so I can get my hands on one. I end up having the students watch someone read it online if I'm too late. This was a good deal and now I won't have to run and get one every year. I much rather read to them myself and have the book as a reference. There are wonderful online lessons that go along with this book and promots being helpful, kind and that everyone is unique.

I appreciate the solid definition of a New year's resolution and it was fine for the purpose of teaching my small children about resolutions but that's it. It was fine, adequate, okay. There was nothing outstanding. It is a good serviceable story

I bought this book to share with my five-year-old on New Year’s Eve. She loved the story and it helped her understand what a New Year’s resolution is. I purchased the hardcover version. Great quality.

This is a wonderful book to teach students about New Year's resolutions. I used this book for my special needs students. They understood the plot and the characters. I used this book as the center of my unit. My students understood what resolutions were and they made their own based on their behaviors in school and what they wanted to improve. They were able to graph their progress and see results.

I used this book with my first grade class at the beginning of January. It explains nicely what a 'resolution' is. I used it before we did some writing about our goals for the second half of the school year. I will definitely use it again next year!

The story is very cute and my TK students totally understood what a resolution was after reading this. I would recommend buying a hard copy and not downloading for kindle. The print was so tiny!!

While New Year's is usually celebrated in January, we began our SCHOOL year in our room with a "New Year's Celebration" ( including hats, noise makers, decorations and an end of the day toast with lemonade!) on the first day!) On our first days we read many books to help us plan our hopes, dreams and wishes for the year of learning together.This one helped spark students to write their new year goals, hopes, dreams. Perfect!

My kids loved this book and it was perfect for teaching goal setting and showing empathy towards others.
