About the Author

How do I adequately praise the work of these scientists and doctors? I bought this book in a effort to help my teenage daughter with a catalogue of health and emotional issues. She had suffered from C. dificil as a small child due to multiple antibiotic allergies. At 15, she had cystic acne, rosacea, insomnia, severe adversarial behavior, and menstrual irregularities. We have been to acupuncturists, naturopaths, and conventional doctors. One day into megadosing niacin and she stopped being offended at the drop of a hat, walked around singing with her brother, and stopped obsessively checking her skin in a mirror. Two days into dosing, she reported better concentration, social interactions at school, AND THE ACNE ON HER BACK IS 50% BETTER. Yesterday, I started giving her Dr. Ruth Harrell's dosages of nutrients for learning disabled kids plus the niacin. This morning at eight a.m., all of the acne on her back is healed, her face is 35% better, and she slept.All of this suffering because she had global subclinical malnutrition. It cannot be done with diet alone. We eat a no sugar, low carb, organic, low dairy paleo diet.

I bought this book more out of curiosity than out of any idea that niacin could make a difference in my life. After reading through the refreshing prose for a while, I was inspired to try some instant niacin myself. The proof, after all, is in the pudding. Was I surprised!On 600 mg instant niacin a day:(a) I could suddenly sleep well 7 hours a night (I was taking 300 micrograms melatonin at night which I no longer needed);(b) Besides going as red as a beet when I took my first two 100 mg tablets, I noticed an immediate boost in mood; yes, niacin often makes me feel high. (I am someone who never drinks or takes drugs.)(c) My joint pains and muscle pains, which I had for years, went away overnight, almost completely.(d) I had so much more energy, which remains steady through each day (I was taking carnitine, which I no longer need.)(e) I had a very unpleasant, painful, protruding pile which had lasted for more than a month, before I began taking niacin. Within 3 days my pile had shrunk, I could hardly feel any lump and the muscle tone in that area felt much better. I haven't had any problems with piles in the 6 months I have been taking niacin, no matter how much I push.(f) On a gram of slow release niacin, taken in addition to the 600 mg fast niacin a day, my LDL dropped from 5.6 to 3.0 in two weeks. My HDL went from 1.31 to 1.68.The book is not merely about the many benefits of niacin, but is the story of niacin, of how Dr. Hoffer first came to use it on many of his patients. It is also, in a very real sense, the story of Dr. Hoffer himself, and what a wonderful, inspiring story it is!According to this book, about 50% of all people in the world can benefit from taking niacin every day. I am clearly one of them. Curiously, the opposite seems to be true for my wife: for one, it aggravated her piles overnight, causing them to flare up painfully, and she experienced no subjective benefits. It is therefore a question of each person must try for himself / herself and closely monitor what they experience. There is a bit of jargon that apparently explains this: under-methylation (me); over-methylation (my wife.)The only downsides I experienced (I do not see the itching, burning sensation on the skin and the hot flashes which sometimes arise, as such) is that it seemed to aggravate my sinusitis. However, I was able to counteract this effect effectively with curcumin and msm. Further, if taken directly before switching off the light at night, I tended to experienced arythmias (irregular heart beat) while waiting to fall asleep or on waking during the night. So now I take 200 mg about an hour before I switch off the night light, which makes all the difference.One area the book does not effectively or safely address, which is a bit of a bummer, is clear directions on the use of slow niacin. Reading this book, one can be forgiven for thinking that it would be safe to take 3 grams of slow release niacin a day, instead of 3 grams of fast release niacin, although this book almost exclusively recommends the latter. However, it is in fact quite unsafe to take 3 grams of slow release niacin a day, for every 500 mg of slow release niacin is the equivalent of 1 gram of fast niacin in its effect on the liver. Thus, if you want to substitute slow release niacin for 3 grams of instant niacin, you should take no more than 1.5 grams of slow release niacin a day. This does not mean you will experience exactly the same effect/ benefit if you do. In my case, I find that a gram of slow release niacin (which is the equivalent of two grams of fast niacin) and up to a gram of fast niacin a day produces the best synergy of benefits in me, with each enhancing the other.This book also recommends inositol hexanicotinate (it says you need to take twice as much as the instant niacin to get the same benefit). I guess the good doctor and Andrew Saul speak from their experience. However, I haven't found this product to be effective at all, and there is mounting evidence that inositol hexanicotinate is not very bio-available.Besides for these few complaints about the value of this book, I highly recommend it, even if you are not wondering how effective niacin might be for you, and whether you should take it or not. it is written in refreshing, easy to follow, non-jargon prose and if you read it, you will know more about niacin than most medical doctors do.For lowering cholesterol, 1.5 grams of slow release niacin a day is best, or take a gram of slow release niacin and up to a gram of fast release niacin per day. If you are thinking primarily of your cholesterol, "Cholesterol Control Without Diet! The Niacin Solution" by Dr. William B Parsons Jr. would be more up your alley. However, the latter is not nearly as exciting a read as the current read.I highly recommend "Niacin - The Real Story".Jean

I've been taking niacin for 11 years and have performed extensive research on it. The authors do make some claims which seem a bit exaggerated with respect to some of the properties of niacin, but they do a good job of explaining its multiple effects. Forty years ago, before the advent of statins, niacin was the mainstay of lipid management. Unfortunately, niacin has recently been given a bad rap according to badly designed studies (e.g. AIM-HIGH).Personally, although I did try the combination of niacin and simvastatin for 6 months, I've relied on niacin and proper diet to improve my cardiovascular parameters. I've managed to decrease my calcium score by 14% per year and I'm the only male in my family to not have a stroke or heart attack by the age of 50 (I'm 57 now).One aspect of niacin which the author's experience and mine differ significantly is the niacin flush. The authors claim that it rapidly decreases, but in my case, the flushing only got significantly better after 4 to 5 years of continuous use (I use the immediate release form). The flushing is mediated by two distinct pathways. The flushing caused by the production of PGD2 can be lessed with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as aspirin, naproxen sodium, etc. The other pathway is mediated by the release of serotonin from platelets, which is much more difficult to counter. I've read that either Thorazine or Haldol helps with the flushing from that pathway. Great. Flushing is reduced as long as niacin is taken every day, with very few missing doses. The authors do mention three times a day dosing, but every time I took it three times a day, I experienced elevated liver enzymes, which is an indication of liver damage. On the other hand, taking the immediate-relase form twice daily has never caused a problem.With niacin and the proper diet, I've increased my HDL from 30 to 70, dropped my LDL to 100 and halved my triglycerides.

An excellent introduction to Thomism. Feser's familiarity with modern analytical philosophy allows him to respond to the most common, and probably the best objections, raised against Thomistic metaphysics and Thomism in general.An important caution: this is not a "beginner's guide" in the sense that it is for those who have absolutely no prior exposure to philosophy or rigorous argument. I can say this because, prior to this book, I myself had no prior exposure to philosophy or rigorous argument. I had many questions and had to get answers elsewhere. This is no fault of Feser; my questions did not have to do with the validity of his reasoning or the clarity of his terms – I simply was not well acquainted with philosophy, having never even taking philosophy 101 in college. For anyone else who is in my position, you are in luck! Feser runs an excellent blog at edwardfeser.blogspot.com. I picked up a habit of googling "Edward Feser [insert topic of confusion]" and it's allowed to me better grasp the content of this book.The chapter on metaphysics is difficult but critical and it sets up the rest of the book. If you're not getting it, moving on is, in my humble opinion, futile. Once you do get it, however, the rest of the book will not be as difficult.For atheists, the chapter on Natural Theology will be of most interest. Again, if you are unfamiliar with Aristotletian or Thomistic metaphysics, you won't do yourself any favors by jumping into the chapter on Natural Theology. This isn't pop philosophy a la Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens, or Dennett; you have to actually do intellectual work to meet Aquinas and Thomism halfway. If you do do this work, this chapter just may change your life (who needs self-help books when you have a disciplined pursuit of Truth?). Feser goes through Aquinas' 5 Ways to proving the existence of God and defends them rather exhaustively against various objections.The remaining two chapters, on Psychology and on Ethics, are also excellent. The section on natural law, while short, is deep.My only criticism of the book is that I wish Feser dwelt more on the objections of many naturalist philosophers to the claim that biological inquiry rests on a teleological foundation. I did not come away convinced by Feser's argument from this book, but after reading Feser's other work on teleology, I was convinced of Feser's argument. In the book, however, the section is too short.My last comment is on the quality of writing. When I was an atheist, I thought nobody could write better than Christopher Hitchens (you can tell I am very well read). I was wrong. Edward Feser writes better than Christopher Hitchens. Far better. Not only that, unlike Hitchens, Feser isn't mostly flash; his arguments have bite and depth to them.

There are two questions which any Christian who has struggled with doubt and who cares about having an intellectually rigorous worldview will have asked:1. What is the scope of fundamental Christian convictions?2. How confident can we be in the truth of those convictions?It seems that in our time the answers most commonly given to those questions are 'very small' and 'not very'. To elaborate, many Christians seem to accept that modern science has unique, nearly exclusive authority to describe the world we live in and that scientific reasoning is the gold standard of rationality. It follows that theology is more a matter of hope than knowledge and that the best we can do is show that at least some, often greatly truncated, Christian truth claims are compatible with modern science. Modern Christian theology is an asthmatic, 90 pound weakling with heart trouble in the boxing ring of truth.Enter the doctor: Edward Feser's Aquinas (and by extension Aquinas himself) is a blast of fresh air in those wheezing lungs, a jolt of current through that palpitating heart, and an injection of growth hormone into those wimpy muscles. Starting in Chapter 2 with an exposition of basic Aristotelian and Thomistic metaphysical concepts, including act and potency, form and matter, the four causes, essence and existence, and the nature of the transcendentals (like being, truth and goodness), Feser painstakingly demonstrates how these concepts explain the world we inhabit remarkably well, and remain plausible and defensible despite their development alongside erroneous scientific views. Not only that, but since science in any age rests upon (sometimes unexamined) metaphysical foundations (see the classic The Metaphysical Foundations of Modern Science), Aquinas' metaphysics presents itself as a particularly attractive set of foundations for the contemporary study of nature.Up to this point, the book would be of interest not just to readers interested in the history of ideas but also readers interested in formulating a comprehensive philosophy of nature. But the implications of this philosophy of nature for theology are astounding: as Dr. Feser shows in chapter 3, the observed reality of change, the distinction between essence and existence in contingent objects and the reality of final causation all inescapably imply the existence of God as understood by the great philosophical minds of all the major theistic religious traditions: the absolutely unique, simple, unconditioned, omnipotent Reality that grounds the existence and intelligibility of the world of our experience, and is itself perfect goodness, beauty and truth. Contrary to popular perception, Aquinas' Five Ways of demonstrating God's existence are sound and compelling once placed in their proper context of Aristotelian metaphysics, and once their conclusions are thoroughly analyzed they are seen to imply the attributes classically attributed to God. Since the reality of change, final causation and the distinction between essence and existence are readily observable, even to unbelievers, the existence and nature of God (at least to a certain extent) can be inferred on non-religious grounds, making Aquinas' project a particularly compelling example of natural theology.In the remaining two chapters Dr. Feser explicates Thomistic views of human nature and ethics, which again are fairly straightforward applications of the Aristotelian metaphysical principles laid out in chapter 2. The Thomistic understanding of the soul is an alternative to both Cartesian dualism, which posits the existence of two distinct substances to explain mind-body interactions, and materialism, which reduces all mental activity to brain physiology. Thomistic ethics is premised upon human beings have a real nature, which identifies the good for humans as those actions which fulfil the ends intrinsic to that nature.When I reviewed Dr. Feser's The Last Superstition: A Refutation of the New Atheism, I remarked that his exposition had almost persuaded me to become a Thomist, but that I still had some reservations. I own all of Elinor Lipman's books and have read them multiple times. Her main strength seems to lie in inventing awful (but not boring) characters that make you wonder what they will do next. However, I have to say, the formula (with more recent books and especially this latest) has gotten old.I agree with other reviewers about the unlikable characters (I thought Geneva was the best drawn of them all):Blank, uninteresting, unsympathetic character Daphne tosses mom's highly annotated yearbook which is found by interesting but also unsympathetic character Geneva. Highjinks to retrieve incendiary yearbook and major life revelations ensue. Trite subplot romance, strangely incestuous-feeling paternity subplot and dad's later-life romance subplot intertwine with main plot of heroine finding herself. By the end, I'm sorry to say most of us will probably not care. Frankly, I wished Daphne would find herself alone and shunned, that's how much I disliked her.As usual, Lipman's writing is clever and erudite and, for that alone, the book is a page-turner. However, also, as usual, there is a weird time warp happening. I'm not sure if anyone else is noticing but with later books Lipman seems stuck in the decades from which she sprang. Her characters' language, appearance and behavior is dated (very 50's, 60's, 70's) and yet her primary characters (in this book) are supposed to be around 30. But the main plot is focused on a yearbook and character antics from 1968 (into the 70's) which is eons away from 2019 (I'm from 1968 so I know). All I can say is that it is weird. If you do the math, the Lipman-world decades don't work right.In all, a light quick read which can be appreciated for Lipman's quality writing. For better Lipman books, I'd recommend (most recently) "The Family Man" and for earlier stuff, maybe "The Dearly Departed" or "The Inn at Lake Devine".

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Elinor Lipman. However this book, like the last couple of books, seems rushed. There are a couple of plotlines that have no purpose. Other plotlines have purpose, so much so that it is obvious they've been contrived. More importantly, there isn't a single character in this book that I like or care about! I can't root for the protagonist, she's just not likeable. In fact, she's so unlikeable I want to slap her. There isn't a single character in this book that I can root for. The book isn't funny or delightful, it's just a bunch of sad people making dumb choices. At the end of the book, I asked myself, "why?" Read Lipman's other works. I have read all off Ms. Lipman's novels, and all are funny, poignant, wry, cheerful with the good guy winning. They would make excellent fodder for a sitcom. Good Riddance is no exception. While it's not my favorite (that's Inn at Lake Devine), the reader is drawn into the characters from the beginning. Daphne is a bit daffy, newly moved to a new (small) apartment after a less than a year sham marriage, taking a correspondence course in chocolate making with mixed results, and reentering the singles scene with across the hall neighbor, Jeremy. Her recently deceased mother has left her the yearbook from 1968 Pickering High in a handwritten codicil. It is the source of the trouble, laughs, and collaboration with Geneva, a very wacky neighbor who purports to being a documentary film maker. Geneva reclaims the yearbook that Daphne has sent to the recycling bin in a fit of decluttering. There are a lot of secrets in that book that was dedicated to June, Daphne's mother, teacher and yearbook advisor that year. Some of the events are a bit over the top but still fun. And, as usual, Daphne prevails. When reading this book, I pictured Tina Fey, John Ritter and the like. It was a fun read!

This was one of the most annoying books I have read in a really long time. I purchased it immediately after hearing what Bill Goldstein had to say about it and I usually love his reviews. It was readable but just so annoying. All this about a dumb yearbook?! Who cares! It just never got anywhere that interesting, the characters were either boring or not developed enough to really know, and there were a lot of dated words used. It could have been a really good story if written/edited better.

I found the main character scattered, often hysterical, and plain annoying, with constantly questionable judgment. She had no qualms taking a cash gift from someone she just met, or for squeezing her ex for more alimony while she wasn’t even trying to be employed. The plot was thin and there was an ongoing switch in what was actually said aloud v. just “thought” that made you have to re-read to clarify. I’ve read and liked other books by this author but was very disappointed in this one.

I love her books. All of them have been great and I was so looking forward to this new one. It started out fun and interesting but during the second half I was saying, huh? It really fizzled out and I am disappointed.

I really liked the short summary of the book. How cool to go back and learn about your Moms life as a well loved teacher while your Dad is the principal. Unfortunately the story briefly went back in time to the year of the yearbook. The Dad character seems a little cowardly with his path in life, and the main character doesnt seem fazed by life altering news. I feel like the idea of the story had so much more potential, but it never came to fruition.

Always enjoyable Elinor Lipman keeps us smiling through another lighthearted novel. An interesting coincidence leads to all kinds of family antics. Would be great for Netflix.

You need a lot of prerequisite mathematics to understand Laplace transforms -- algebra, analytic geometry, calculus and differential equations and an understanding of what you learned means in reality. Given that, it is very concise. Laplace transforms are a powerful means to a mathematical end. The author handled the topic well.

This is one of those self published little gems, but unlike so many others, has a LOT of value if you can organize it yourself. First, there is no index, so the 150 or so worked problems flow generally from the chapters, but for specifics you'll have to create your own index if you want to use it as a reference work. Second, the Chapter titles at the beginning are very general, and don't agree with the Intro (which says, for example, that 4 is about electrical current flow (meaning "topic" 4) in circuits, whereas CHAPTER 4 is actually about strings, dynamic systems, etc.The formulas and solutions are high quality, with few errors, and have plenty of diagrams. Despite the promotional reviews there are NOT really a lot of verbal descriptions, because the book moves at a very rapid place from example to example in order to pack at least one or two examples of each type of problem in 300 pages. The author does use the solution notation convention so later problems do refer back to previous exercises.In summary, these are the class notes of a very bright mathematician, and show the sub steps for each technique quite clearly, as long as you know the symbols and understand the operations, which are not explained in detail. Not a lot of space is spent on inverses, which are really the toughest part of transform operators, but the problems selected solve quite clearly without the need for highly complex inversion manipulations. Some of the applications covered include solutions of PDE's, electrical applications, structural and dynamic applications, and of course equations of motion, waves, vibrating strings, etc.For the price, a lot of good worked examples if you can get around the lack of indexing. Although there are also problems and solutions that are somewhat didactic, the book doesn't really follow a "course" format as much as topics and examples, more for the engineer who has forgotten a technique and wants to look up an example solution. From that point of view, very well done.If there is one "best practice" in this book that I wish other, more polished texts from Wiley and Springer would follow, it is the fact that the author, while assuming you know transforms, does NOT assume you know all the intermediate steps in each problem - solution, so there are far fewer "jumps" to figure out-- the jumps are given!! For learning, maybe you need the discipline of finding intermediate steps yourself, but for real life applications and problems, you'll thank the author for including them.

Think Blues Brothers here . . . cool stuff!Blues guitar players sometimes forget that they can, and should, imitate horn players, and that's where this book comes in. Use these simple licks for solos, backup, intros, etc. to fill up your band sound.A lot of Larry's books are for early intermediate. This one can be used by an ambitious near-beginner, but the riffs are also suitable for weekend gigging and professional use.

I play the accordion, not the guitar. Never felt like I could even try to play the blues before. But ever since I found this book in my Christmas stocking, things have been different.Apart from a few pages of thoughtful advice and interesting reference information, the book contains nothing but music. I'm not a particularly talented accordion player, but all the riffs here are easy to play as presented. You are free to create variations that can be as hard as you want to make them. Or you can just play them the way they are. Either way, this book opens doors to hours of music that feels satisfying to play.The riffs on the CD that comes with the book follow slightly different chord progressions, all but one in the key of B-flat. After being played on the saxophone with accompaniment once, the same 12 measures are repeated with just the accompaniment. If you can get the accompaniment section to repeat over and over--I haven't yet, but I hear there are ways--you can spend more time developing one riff. Accordion players are lucky because we can play the riffs and accompany ourselves at the same time without using the CD at all.Even though it says "Guitar Edition" on the cover, it works fine for accordions, too. The more I work from this book, the more I might be tempted to spice up some of those polkas I've been playing...

I already own a copy of the first edition, a paperbound book, as well as the e-book version. I wear a hair system to cover over my balding head and was wondering what was involved in making a hair system; consequently, I purchased this book after doing an online evaluation of books on wig making. What a treasure this book is for anyone wanting to know about wig making, as well as someone who actually wants to do it. I was so inspired by the documentation that I actually purchased all the tools needed (canvas head, good quality lace, human hair, ventilating tools and a fine scissors). I watched several youtube videos (as well as the ones by Ruskai and group on their website) and started ventilating my lace cap. It took a while for me to get the hang of it but I thoroughly enjoyed making my own toupee. It looks as good as the ones I purchased from a wig maker. I will probably continue making my own toups from this point on.I will not repeat all of the good comments others have made on this superb book, but will emphasize that it comes with a lot of clearly written directions, excellent illustrations and good references. I talked extensively with Gabriel at De Meo brothers in New Jersey, suppliers of high quality hair and lace netting for professionals in the film industry and the theatre, and he agreed that this is THE book one should get in order to proceed with this venture.I like that this edition is now in hard cover that is wire bound (Wire O Binding). This is accomplished by gluing the last, thick page of the book onto the heavy, glossy back cover so that the whole book is held onto the cover by means of the last page. The front is not bound to the hard cover at all. This enables the reader to open the book so that it lies completely flat on your work surface. HOWEVER, be very careful not to turn the front cover back onto the back cover (like you would with some spiral bound documents) as this will cause the book to completely separate from the hard cover. It took me awhile to re-join the two and I did damage some of the holes. In order to prevent this from happening again, I will run a wire to completely close over the gap in the Wire O binding at the back of the book where the pages may escape.A better way of binding this book would be to use a spiral (rather than Wire O) binding that penetrates holes in the front and back covers, making it impossible for the two to separate. It would not look as nice as the present binding, but it would permit one to completely open that book so only one page is viewed at a time. Plus, this would make for a much sturdier binding that will last much longer than the Wire O binding.

Phenomenal read and sets you on the right track for professional wig making. I suggest getting the next Volume for in depth styling techniques through the ages (I purchased Victorian to Present), as this book focuses more on the basic foundations of caring for, washing, storing, steaming and even building wigs. I personally was up to speed with most of the chapters, but there were amazing details about adding lacefront to hardfront wigs and ventilating/lace and hair direction and head measurements and tracings. It’s like my new bible for ventilating.

Wonderfully detailed photos and description of the ventilation process as well as many other techniques and terms used in the business. A comprehensive text that I plan to refer to a lot in the future. I also recommend Allison Lowery's other two other texts entitled Historical Wig Styling.

Amazing book! It has all about the different types of laces and hair and needles. It shows you how to take measurements when making custom wigs. It teaches you ventilating and wefting. Great facial hair chapter and styling chapter. Full of beautiful pictures! There's also a really cool section on building wigs with cage bases and finding jobs.

Outstanding book on wigs and wig making. I've rarely read a book on any subject that was as clearly and expertly written.

For anyone truly interested in actually making/building/repairing lace wigs, this book is a treasure! I was actually a little surprised that it goes into such detailed depth with regards to not only wigmaking, but all the other kinds of hairpieces and how they are made and when to use them(when working in theater or tv). The pictures are all clear, and well lit. There's even a few very short companion videos on an accompanying website showing knotting and sewing techniques....The only thing i think would make this book better is an accompanying dvd to show more techniques in real time, and more websites/sources to actually buy tools and lace and hair from. The author makes references to one website in particular, which i visited, and there's very little actually on the website, sent them an email, to which i never received a reply. It can be hard to find all the tools/materials you need for wigmaking in one spot, so i've had to piece my kit together from several different places, including ebay. You've gotta shop around though, cuz several people sell the exact same things, some very reasonably, and some mark prices up dramatically to make a larger profit...So in a nutshell, i would definitely recommend this book. It's like the "textbook" of wigmaking. The book, combined with the author's short vids, and user uploaded vids on youtube are all you need to learn to make/build/repair/knot lace wigs.

Absolutely fascinating -- the walk through of how to make wigs also indirectly explains why they are so ridiculously expensive to buy pre-made.. This book is very straightforward and methodical, and includes a lot of pictures to help visualize the techniques it explains. I would give it six stars if I could.

I ordered this book because I want to learn how to add hair to a lace top wig and instructional material is scarce. I was a bit put off by the price of this book but I think it is worth the money. This book is written by two people that have years of experience making and caring for wigs. They photos are great, the different techniques are great and they really go into great detail in the art of making theatrical and non-theatrical wigs.
