This is a quick read, but doesn’t provide much more information than what you can get from a website. It’s highly anecdotal and is more a list of things the author learned as a PA. Not a bad read if you’re really green and prefer books over websites, but not really worth the money.The author also tells about advice he got that if he wants to be a director he should just direct. Which, on its own is not bad advice, but in the context it basically tells people if they want to be a director they shouldn’t bother being a PA.

My son graduated from CSU San Francisco's film program last May. I bought this book and Movie Speak (How to talk like you belong on a movie set) for him partly as mementos, and partly to fill in any gaps he might have in his film production savvy. Like so many bright kids, he absorbs data by osmosis and since he's already worked on 3 or 4 productions much of the info in these books may seem rudimentary to him. Nonetheless, as someone who has spent a lot of time on film sets in the '70's and '80's, and loved the lingo ("Give me a half-apple with the baby plate."), I thought the books were useful. Both are clearly written and don't take themselves too seriously.

This independent glimpse in to the world of a production assistant is a must-have for any aspiring filmmaker wanting to step on set. Not only does this have practical advise for making cinema, but I found there are useful tidbits for life in general. I don't want to say exactly what it is, because I feel as if it's a secret that I have discovered and should only be available to those who take a chance to buy and read this guide. It's a simple phrase, that when used has a surprising amount of power. When you read Caleb's guide, you will understand.

This book is small, a very quick read, but is still entertaining nonetheless. It definitely won't teach you everything you need to know, but it's a nice little resource for people new to the world of film.

if you are considering becoming a P.A. or want some idea of what a P.A. does (or Should be doing) on a movie set then this book is a must read.Short and to the point. Caleb Clark will guide you to doing the job the right way. It's not a tech manual, it's a no-nonsense, get your hustle on and get to work pep-talk about the do's and don'ts of the The Production Assistant's world.I love this book and I read it again and again.

This book really is a great purchase for anyone looking to be a P.A., it gives you all the basic knowledge and helps you be more prepared for your job. My only complaint is that it's so short! If you're looking for a great book to follow this one up with, go with Getting It Done by Joshua Friedman. They both work really well hand in hand and help you be as knowledgable as possible.

Insightful and to the point. Everything you expect a handbook to relay. The author expresses his experience with detail and humor.

After I read this I emailed the author to thank him-- it was that helpful. Don't set foot on set without reading this first, O lowly PA. Then if time permits, read a book about mind reading.
