We keep adding to our collection of Read-Along storybooks; my daughter (3 years old) loves them! When we are at home, we use a boombox to listen to the CD, but I also like taking these in the car. My daughter can turn the pages of the book on her own when she hears the chime and loves following along with the story. She really enjoys hearing the voices and dialogue from the movies she knows so well.Note: The Disney storybooks vary in length; this one is 11:35 in length.

My daughter loves the Disney read-along collection. This story is no exception. She likes to fall asleep to the audio portion (which we put on her iPod). Some of the Disney stories are too scary for her at bedtime, but The Lion King is not. She enjoys this story both at night and during the day.

This was a great deal. I loved how the CD was included with the book. This makes it easy for my toddler to enjoy reading.

Grandma was told to buy this book/CD for a child learning to read. One of my favorite plays/movie, so feel very good about this gift.

The narrator is very good. Chime sound to tell you to turn pages. Voices from movie. Unfortunarely the book and pages are very thin and stick together, making it easy to rip. These are not the same Disney read along as the 80's.

This volume, though, provides an accessible introduction to the relationship between changes in food choices and society, culture, and politics.The book explores a number of subjects in turn. There is some repetition, but not so much as to be obtrusive to the reader. Part I explores the invention of farming/agriculture and the changes wrought thereby in human society and culture (Standage attributes the rise of civilization to this change from the prior hunting-gathering style). There is a nice discussion of the role of domesticating maize, rice, and wheat (among others). Many have observed that increasing surpluses of food due to farming led to social differentiation and hierarchy, Part II of the book considers that relationship. Part III examines food trade, with some detailed consideration of the role of spices. Indeed, the desire for Europeans to import spices from afar helped create an international trade. Food, too, was tied to the Industrial Revolution, the subject of Part IV. Part V looks at the relationship between food and war. The last part (VI) considers "Food, Population, and Development."The final chapter wraps things up and raises some interesting issues, including the rise of the East in recent decades. He notes that China and India are rapidly becoming major economic powers, and that their food supply has a role in this.All in all, a useful volume for those who want an introduction to the subject. There is not a lot that is going to be new to the person who has read in this area. Nonetheless, a decent introduction to the subject. . . .The book is functionally written, although the words do not sing from the pages as one reads.

An edible History of Humanity was a book filled with lots of detail and described how food has changed technology throughout history. Tom Standage goes into detail of how new innovations have been created due to food but he only includes a small handful of foods such as maize and potatoes. I wish that he would have included more foods because overall it would have given me a better understanding of how foods have impacted technology over the course of history. Although i would like to know more foods, I would recommend this book to any student because Standage goes into to great detail on how the transportation of food caused the development of technology and how people would make religious sacrifices for their Gods.Tom Standage covers his topic really well overall. He follows in time when certain events happen. His main purpose of the book was to inform people on how food has improved technological innovations throughout time. He has stayed on topic on telling the reader about his research. The pace of the book is slower and seems a little too easy to follow along with. I would suggest to add more information so i could understand more of his idea.

I enjoy learning about history. I enjoy food.I found that this book met both cravings very well. It also fits into the many aspects when studying history and its causes. Climate change is one such discipline that has brought new understanding to this pursuit. The history of our food supply through agriculture, climate change, relocation, and hybridization has very much influenced human history as a whole and its individual parts. This also touches on the great search for spices and the many turns it had to make to supply the Europeans new passion. It really captures the human experience in the lacks and abundances of the mighty power of food.This has been a wonderful surprise and a great addition to my library.

An Edible History of Humanity provides an amazing twist on the history we know. The written history of the world focuses on battles and politics with occasional reference to science. The author discusses the amazing role of food, specifically plant food, in the history. As plants are grown and modified by selection new sources of food are created. The timing of these discoveries in the history of the world leads me to reevaluate the role played by military action and political survival. Without food the army cannot move. Sounds simple but depending on the century the answer is more important that military planning (just look at Napoleon in Russia). Because the book does not explain the details of all of the historical events mentioned, it is important to have a reasonable background. In my mind some of the negative reviews below come from people with minimal background in history or people who were expecting a one line take-home message from the book.

I don’t know if it is the author’s writing style or what, but I really didn’t care for this book. Some parts were really interesting; some felt like a lecture full of opinions rather than facts (history, please); and some parts weren’t really about food. I wanted to like it more than I did.

Now that I have finished the entire series,thought I would submit a reviewThe story of Tavi is revealed little by little with each book. The cast of characters are quite likeable with doses of humor thrown in. You almost feel that the characters are part of the family by the final book.The magical system is intriguing and makes for interesting situations. When I first started the series I expected that a character with no magical skill(no fury crafting) would devolve into the usual cliches. But thankfully Jim Butcher is a better author than that and I was not able to easily predict the plot.I thoroughly recommend this series and has become one of my favorites.My only negative feedback is the amount of battle description throughout the series. There are complex and lengthy descriptions of both large scale battles and one on one battles that really don't add much to the story. Otherwise, I greatly enjoyed the adventure!I'm ready for more from Jim butcher!

This is the culmination of the Codex Alera series, and it goes out with a bang. Tavi is coming back to Alera leading a most unusual army, only to find that his fellow Alerans are up against the wall with the merciless Vord crushing their greatest strongholds and killing their strongest furycrafting lords. At least by this point, Tavi is finally coming into his own furycrafting strength, but even he is no match for the might of the Vord. Then again, Tavi has always been smarter than he was strong, and he makes good use of that in this final war.In addition to Tavi and his crew, we see some fine performances put in by the remaining furycrafters. Even Aquataine puts in a good show. But nothing compares to the rabbits Tavi’s uncle Bernard manages to pull out of his hat. Much of those particular tricks had their origins as wild ideas from Tavi years before, but Bernard has taken them to their most impressive ends. Perhaps the most world-shattering moment comes at the command of Bernard, as a hundred commoners throw down a demonstration of power that would completely spend a High Lord’s power… and then do it again the very next minute, and the next, and the next. It was one of those moments where even as the reader you stick her head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.I won’t spoil the end, but I’ll just say that it was quite satisfying. Just about everyone got what they deserved, in one flavor or another. In particular, the epilogue was good, tying up a number of loose ends and giving some hint about what was to follow in the years and decades ahead. As one character said, the interesting times were definitely over, and yet it felt the new story of Alera was just beginning.So, if you’re contemplating this series – particularly if you’re struggling through the slow first book, Furies of Calderon, give it a shot. The road to the payoff is long and fun, and the payoff is definitely worth it.

I love Jim Butcher's writing style--and thank God I do, otherwise I never would have been able to make it thru 6 volumes of the Codex Alera. I love that he can build a scene as finely detailed at he does, but halfway through book 5 I was thinking about abandoning the series (which I HATE to do) but there *is* such a thing as *too much* detail! Seriously, this could easily have been shortened to maybe 4 books, but I can see why he felt the need for disparity between novels to fall where they did.Butcher is great at creating characters that are easy to love --and love to hate, for that matter. Kitai and the Marat could have been fleshed out a bit better, though. For all his detail, you'd think he would put a little more into his main character 's only love interest and her people. But the thing I kept finding myself wanting was more background and lore of the Furies. Shoot-- the title of all 6 books included the Furies--and we're just supposed to use our imagination to fill in the (fairly gigantic) gaps?? Come on, man! If we had your imagination, we wouldn't need to read your books, now would we?

This is the last in the series and I very much enjoyed the series. It is not mind bending, it is not full of surprises it is good old fashioned fantasy and magic with main characters that are enjoyable, honorable and mildly conflicted. The supporting cast is both what you would expect and what you probably enjoy most when choosing this type of fiction. My only criticism is that after reading the rest of the series some of the themes that are detailed in each multiple times got a bit repetitious. However, I especially enjoyed the underlying theme of different cultures banding together against a foe that would destroy them all. I thought the books did well to illustrate that the cultures had strengths and weaknesses even those that were only lightly investigated such as the icemen. I also appreciated the thought put into the consequences of certain new tactics. From an engineering stand point the attention to the difficulties inherent when using items in new and unusual ways (spoiler: Ice Ships) showed a depth of consideration that is easily glossed over in this genre.Having discovered this author via the Dresden files I was pleasantly surprised by his excellent foray into Fantasy.

Though my knowledge of Excel is beyond the intermediate level, I was looking for an easy and approachable learning system for the novices in the office who were constantly asking me for Excel help. I don't mind being asked, but they were often reluctant to interrupt me, so I thought it best to provide them with a desk reference.Whether you start from the beginning of the book, one lesson at a time, or dive into a specific topic, the novice learner will find what he's looking for. The page layout, with full color graphics, tips and hints and many examples, will allow a learner to quickly grasp a concept and put it into use immediately. The only problem with the book is that I bought only one copy, so it is constantly being shuffled from one desk to another... I guess I'll have to break down a buy a few more !

I had great experience with the Excel 2007 version of this book. I used it to get up to speed on Pivot Tables very quickly. It provided me with everything I needed to know. The Pivot Table section of the 2010 edition is half the length of the earlier edition. If you don't already know how to use Pivot Tables, I doubt you could use the instructions productively. When I need pointers, I find I am better off reverting to my older 2007 edition.

Love these "Visually" how to books. Have been using them for years. Quick info, detailed "screen shots". Have them for Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, Windows 7, Windows Vista, AND Windows 10 is on order as I write. Actually quicker than surfing through the Office community pages, and other sources looking for answers from other users or surfing the entire Microsoft website looking for an answer to your question(s). GREAT tools! I highly recommend them all.

I sat down one Saturday and read through this book with my computer at hand. It was easy to understand and I loved the visual guides along with the written directions. I haven't actually "built" a complete spreadsheet with "extras" in it, but I used one of the templates and was able to make my way around and it turned out very nice looking. I look forward to using this program more and having this book handy as a reference guide.

I'm a big fan of the "Teach yourself Visually" series, which are a big improvement on the early editions. I would always get annoyed when a book would say, click here, then click there, then do this, then do that, etc. but the screen was not showing what the author was describing, so I would have to guess and then get frustrated because things were not working the way the author described. The Teach your self series leaves you in no doubt as to what you are supposed to do, with numbers, letters colors and pictures giving you very clear instructions on what to do.The Excel book is an excellent guide for managing accounts,using concatenation for setting up tables for databases, using Excel formulas, graphics, charts, etc.This book is very easy to use and a very handy tool to have beside you when using the Excel program.

Fortunately for me, I am not required to setup and keep complicated files involving formulas, etc. I keep only one file requiring the use of the percentage command, but mostly I keep personal data files where regular updated lists are required. If I were required to keep complex files, I would be looking for a more indepth book.

I recommend Teach Yourself Visually Excel 2010.I chose it as the text book for a continuing education class that I taught this fall. I believed that it would be a great resource for students during the class and a beneficial reference book after they had completed the class. Now that the classes are over, I feel that this was a good decision. I will use it for future Excel 2010 classes that I teach.The book covered all the topics needed to gain a broad understanding of Microsoft Excel. While I used it for a Beginning Excel class, it covers not only beginner topics, but some more advanced topics as well.Many students in the class were there to gain the computer skills they needed to improve their career opportunities. This book is comprehensives and will help achieve that goal.While I and the students in my class used Teach Yourself Visually Excel 2010 as the course text book, it is also a good choice if a person can't attend a course or prefers not to. It is clearly written with step-by-step instructions and illustrations showing how to perform common and some not-so-common tasks. The only thing needed in addition to this book to become a successful user of Microsoft Excel is to practice the procedures illustrated in the book.I highly recommend Teach Yourself Visually Excel 2010 for anyone wanting to learn how to use Excel 2010. I also recommend it for experienced users who want to have a handy and clear reference book for when they need to review procedures for operations that they haven't used before or don't use often.

I got this specifically for help with v-lookups -- but they are not included in the book at all!

John Summers is manager of Heritage Services and Curator for the Regional Municipality of Halton in Ontario, Canada, where he leads, develops, designs and fabricates exhibit projects. He has taught students about museology, material culture, museums and technology, and exhibition design and planning for the Ontario Museum Association, the Fleming College Museum Management and Curatorship Program, the University of Victoria’s Cultural Resource Management Program and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information, where he is an adjunct lecturer of Museum Studies. He is course director for Exhibit Planning & Design in the Ontario Museum Association’s Certificate in Museum Studies program. His experience spans more than three decades of work at cultural institutions in Canada and the United States.
