Jane

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up—This present-day graphic novel adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre draws on the original story with some surprising twists. Orphan Jane has grown up in a New England town under the not-so-watchful eye of her relatives and has earned enough money for art school in New York City. Rochester, a mysterious businessman, hires Jane, now a college freshman, to take care of his precocious daughter. Jane becomes a surrogate mother to Adele and catches the eye of her absent father and Mason, Rochester's business partner and Adele's uncle. As the heroine unravels the mystery behind Rochester's wife's death, she falls in love with her boss and the glamorous life that he can afford her while neglecting her studies. She quickly gets embroiled in the dangerous dealings and power struggles of the two men. Screenwriter Brosh McKenna (Devil Wears Prada, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) injects the narrative with intrigue and romance, updating this story for modern audiences while maintaining elements from the source material (the protagonist's naiveté, Rochester's aloofness). The dynamic art changes from sketchy blues and whites (for scenes of the past) to bright yellows and reds (during Jane's first weeks in New York City) and dark blues and purples (menacing and brooding panels involving Rochester), establishing a gothic mood. The variation in panels becomes more comic book—like as the story progresses, especially in the final action-packed scenes. VERDICT This brilliant homage to the classic will enamor fans of the original and intrigue newcomers. A strong choice for graphic novel collections.—Shelley M. Diaz, School Library Journal

This book, written by a woman with brains, takes Jane Eyre into the 21st century. She's just as independent. A lot of things in the original Jane Eyre that left me wondering, this author gives logical explanations. Jane's gone to art school in New York, taken a (male) fashion designer's spare room because he has no money and neither has she, and got a job taking care of a little girl for a rich, powerful hedge fund manager who knows somebody's out to get him, but doesn't know who. (And boy, the art-school stuff is done by somebody who's been there.) The graphic artwork is perfect, but it's illustrating a story that ties together a lot of loose ends from the original "Jane Eyre." This is probably my favorite book of the year.

I love Jane Eyre, I enjoy graphic novels. I am an illustrator. This book seemed right up my alley, however, if you love Jane Eyre, avoid this. The art is great, it was the best part, but it doesn't really suit the story. And the story unfortunately is lacking, also, Rochester's revamped character is more like Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and Jane had no reason at all to fall for him in this version.

Jane Eyre is one of my top 3 favorite novels. I was so excited to get this but unfortunately it fell flat for me. I did enjoy the pictures and thank goodness for them because honestly, they make the book. It wasn't horrible by any means but when you compare it to Jane Eyre, it's really lacking. I thought this was going to be a modern version, with a lot of similarities, but i didn't feel the same "eyre". sad to say it!

I loved the way this was retold for the reader of graphic novels. The story was fantastic and the artwork was beautiful. I highly recommend this retelling..

Absolutely enjoyed reading this modern-day retelling of Jane Eyre. The illustrations are phenomenal. I love how Ramon works the grid, how each panel makes you pause and examine every detail. You find layers of meaning not only within the panels, but also with the way they are arranged on the page. A great graphic novel by two gifted artists. I hope Aline Brosh McKenna and Ramon K. Perez collaborate again.

My daughter read this in one night!

I did not like this. At all.Jane Eyre is one of my favorite all-time classics, and I felt like this graphic novel butchered the story and the characters and everything I ever loved about it. It was made into this Hollywood dramatic piece that I hated. Jane was annoying, her attachment and obsession with Rochestor and his daughter made no sense in this novel, whereas the way it gradually played out in the original was perfectly built to reach the point of catastrophe when she finally finds his "crazy" wife locked up. I was so disappointed. Not to mention that Jane was made into this beautiful, blonde version of her real self, she had no "real" problems as she was more than able to pay rent with a flatmate, and was going to university to get a degree, which angered me even more. She was leaving all this good stuff to go babysit a rich man's daughter, even though it was clearly affecting her studies. Priorities Jane, priorities! The original Jane Eyre knew her priorities, and that's the big difference.Plus, he flirts with her like, once? Or compliments her a couple of times, and bang, they're naked in each other's arms! Next thing you know, he's disappeared and comes back with a woman on his arm. Really? It made me really excited when I found this book, that I would be reading a modern-day retelling of the story, but sadly, it was poorly executed and did not live up to expectations.

Yes, that dreadful little "soap opera" from 1800s has been adapted to a nifty graphic novel format of late 2010s for today's young generation, though it is STILL about a well-behaved, self-sufficient jailbait being easily seduced by a smooth-talking married predator à la "Beauty and the Beast". (Of course, this modified story has several references to most doe-eyed Disney fairy tales - whether the young author actually intended it or not.)With biological parents being lost at sea (just like Anne/Elsa of the whole "Frozen" hype), innocent little Jane starts busting her precocious butt to get herself out of the abusive clutches of her "foster" family and into the glamorous New York City so she can one day be a famous artist.Ironically, the girl is REQUIRED to get REAL WORK if she wants to get in, stay in, AND pay for swanky art school - BEFORE she can even enroll, of course. Sheesh...okay, fine whatever. Then Jane lands a mysterious job where she is supposed to babysit Little Princess Sweetie-Cutesy-Pie, who happens to be the cherubic young daughter of some powerful, filthy-rich businessman who seems to harbor a not-so-healthy fondness for the female sex - especially the blonde kind with supermodel looks. So the rather skeptical Jane is suddenly swept off her feet Cinderella-style by this brooding widower who is perhaps two or three decades OLDER than she is - while she is trying to play a surrogate "Mom" to the unhappy, woman-faced little toddler who desperately needs to thrive in a literally syrupy "happy family" environment, where she will be fed an endless supply of hugs, bedtime stories, and drippy pancakes in her single parent's prolonged absence.Does this mean the heroic young blonde and her pint-sized "Shirley Temple" ward will live happily ever after?Maybe - but only if "Daddy Warbucks" isn't secretly keeping a skeleton in the closet (not even that close at this stage!) within his massive fortress-like castle (such STUNNING architectural and interior design, too!) sheltering the two neglected little waifs.Nice digital art, too.Oh, and (spoilers!) this plucky young Jane Eyre of the 21st century probably never married the gentlemanly wolf in sheep's clothing, though she HAD willingly spread her 17-year-old legs to him on a sleek sailboat one intoxicating night after painting the town bright red. So our little heroine MIGHT end up with a squalling newborn Junior (who would inherit Daddy's perfect eyes, of course) hungrily biting at her just-developed breast 9 months later...
